I went out on a charter boat for my first spearfishing trip, looking for guidance from an experienced individual, thats what I got. The capt on the boat, Troy Wetzel, has been spearfishing for years and shared his experience with the four newbie spearos on board.
I followed capt Troy down to about 70 feet where he shot a 45# AJ. We looked around but the water at this depth was pretty murky, so we headed up. At about 35 feet this cobia swam from behind Troy and looked hungry so I fed him a heaping serving of cold steel. The gun was a metal tech #2 Riffe with the ice pick slip tip. The shaft entered just behind the gill rakes and off we went. I managed to get a rig leg between the cobia and me and the fight was on. As fast as I could gain on the cable he would strip it away. Finally managed to tire him out and subdue him wit a little assistance of my dive buddy. That was all she wrote...
