hello evryone, this is my first contact , ihave so many questions , here is the first.

Ive read a lot of threads concerning breathing up techniques and the reasoning behind proper breathing up techniques. Some of these seem to be a bit contradictory and i'm not to shure which to pay closer attention to.Could someone clarify the relationship beween blood co2 levels / diving ability, acidic & alkaline blood states. Ive been spearfishing for about a year and a half now .I can easily dive to 45 feet and be very comfortable. Ive done this on my own with no training at all. however i know that im ready to carry spearfishing to the next level. I was a heavy smoker up until one month ago. How long is it advisible to wait before i begin serious consistent training, could i be stressing out my lungs. After trying some of the basic breathing exercises i read about in threads, i've experienced that my body reacts in a totally different way when i dive . could someone outline a basic breathing up exercise that i could use to start seeing some inprovement on dovn time. Spearfishing has become an irrisistable passion for me,so much so that i'm worried about advancing ton aggressively , any advice.

Paggman,

Welcome to DeeperBlue!

I guess you've already searched the archives as you mentioned you've read a bunch of threads already - sorry I can't answer your question as I'm new at this. However, DB is brimming with extraordinarily helpful people who are amazingly generous in sharing their knowledge and experience. So, if you don't get any answers to your query here, you might try reposting your question in another area of the Forum (Training/Techniques?)...

Cheers to you, Maytag

thanks for the advice MayTag. Tell me about your experiences as a newcomer. I consider myself to be a newcomer as wel.
we could probarbly compare info. I've been spearfishing for about 18 months now. Twice a week maximum. From this amount of fishing time I could dive to approx 45 feet comfortably and spear game. I've never measured my static times etc and i've never started any scheduled training.

hi paggman try a search on acidic blood levels i think efattah has done some research on it for myself i feel that unless you are planning on breaking records it won,t make too much differenc but i could be wrong. always train slowly a little at a time andf never train in water alone or without a buddy who knows what to do if the sh1t hits the fan. best advice is to do a course if there is one near you where are you based ? If you feel concerned about stressing lungs get in contact with a doc who knows the effects of diving and the stresses they will be put on prevention is always better than cure i guess.
all i use for breathing is slowly relaxing all the time and try to have you exhale twice as long as your inhale with a short pause in between. diving ability is down to so many factors fitness relaxation technique etc just be patient and move forward slowly is best i think.

Hi Pagg_man,
(Just typed out a response then hit 'preview,' but then lost the post!) You have more experience than I do with the spearfishing and 45ft depth :) I started back in August. I am waiting to take a real course in 2007. In the meantime, I've been doing dry statics (tables when I'm disciplined, random holds when I'm bored). I had been doing apnea walks and stairs, but Jon gave me good advice - do that kind of thing on soft ground in case of falls! He also gave me another bit of good advice - "do nothing solo in the pool." This is common sense to most people, but it wasn't to me, as I tend to do most things solo. Right now, my goal is 4 minutes. Current PB is 3 min 47 sec, but I'm basically stuck at 3 min :head :head I know it's not about the clock, but I think I'll feel more confident going into a course with a longer hold. Sorry my notes are not helpful ... hope you keep hanging around here. There are lots of really great, really experienced divers here (like Fcallagy), as you have no doubt already found for yourself. Best, maytag

Welcome pagg_man :D
I found that posting one question at a time and at the appropriate forum/thread makes it easier to get meaningful answers and focussed discussions, which I am sure You will get plenty of here on DB :) (not quite so sure on the 'focussed' part, though :t )

Being fairly new to this as well, I'm always happy about newcomers since they tend to think of questions that I wasn't smart enough to ask. So I'll be watching Your posts closely. :)

So, lotsa fun on DB!

hey may tag, of course, your notes are helpful, and thanks for sharing them, it's always good to have interesting benchmarks from which i could possibly get a handle on where my ability's at and where i think it should be.Also it's so cool to talk about spearfishing and freediving with anyone who's interested.I've learned in life that you could learn quite a lot from people by honestly listening carefully to what they say.

For a while i've been trying to find a venue that offers proper freediving training close to where i live which is in a caribbean island called TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO. I'VE HAD NO LUCK. I think that i need to go to Florida to get this done. until that time i'll probarbly just continue reading threads and carefully trying to apply some of the techniques outlined in them. Not the advanced techniques though. I reacently read what seemed to me to be a very properly outlined thread concerning basic freediving tecniques. It included some outlines for breathing up, and co2 / o2 tables & good info on
equalisation .I think that i'm going to really atempt the tables and and wait paitently for results.
The areas that i fish in usually always have mild to medium currents. All the costal waters in my country are like this with just below good visibility most of the time.I've done mostly what i consider to be shore diving.I think that training in a pool is just so different from what the actual water is like that
i never really tried it.The disadvantage of this i think is that with currents and low vis it's a little harder to relax for breathing up etc. i think that once it's safely within my physical limits i'll accomplish it. My biggest challange i think would be properly using these techniques and keeping composure stalking fish at the same time. It's always in my mind that if i could stay down just a little longer , i would be able to actully observe fish a little more closely, understand how they behave more to hunt them more effectively.

drOp a line SOON laters

::: HOPE YOU SEE THIS THREAD SANSO, THANKS FOR YOUR LAST CONTACT
