Hi Everyone

I'm looking for some advice please.

I went out today for my first ever spearfishing session.

Entered the water at Stackpole Quay i then followed the rocks until i ended up at Barafundle Bay. Vis was poor i think, didn't see a thing (Had a problem with weight, not enough!! i'll sort that next time) however i did enjoy the swim.

I'm thinking about going back to Barafundle Bay and swimming right from the beach, would that be a good idea? (Thinking of my safety, being on my own!!)

Also will the Vis be any better by Saturday? and generally how far off the rocks do people swim?

Any advice guys would be greatly appreciated

Steve

Hi Steve, i will be freediving all through the summer around there and further west, if you ever want to buddy up, always much safer! I plan on starting spearfishing but will come even if im not. Got alot on at the moment so my diving has to slow down. From what i can gather if the visibilty is usually relatively good where you dove. What was it like when you was there? (5 metres etc). I went to blue lagoon in Abereiddy for a free dive recently, lovely place to have a bit of a practice, not bad vis, 6 - 7m maybe more and little or no waves or current. Id reccomend getting in touch with a local dive centre for a vis update. People scuba dive from shore at Stackpole Quay so you should get a good estimate of recent vis. Im relatively new myself so im afraid thats all the info i can give, as for Barafundle Bay if you have to ask whether its a good idea or not then i definately wouldn't do it without a buddy.

Thanks for your advice Richard.
The Vis was about 2m, I think I may have been too close to the shore/rocks. I didn't have enough weight on so it was a struggle getting down.
More weight and a little further from the rocks next time. Its just trail and error I suppose.

Iv had the same issue with weight, found it really frustrating as i was using so much energy getting down... Definately just trail and error and another thing with stackpole quay is id the tides out i know its alot shallower so if you catch high tide you may not have to swim as far out. If you do head further west out of the channel iv found that the visibility is usually better but it all depends on the day. Enjoy and safe diving dude!

Hello Gents and welcome to Deeper Blue.
If you’re both just starting out with your freediving I’d recommend that you have a word with Steve Millard, apneaboy on the forums.
He’ll be able to help out on the training and safety side of things, which might be for the best if you’re just starting out and diving alone.
He’s from Manchester but we don’t hold it against him.:)rofl:)
Enjoy the water lads:)

Thanks for the advice, ill give him a PM and rack his brains for info Lol ...i never dive on my own, read too many SWB lucky escapes to risk it. Thanks again for the advice
