Hi,
is it advisable to do a freediving course at bali (nusa penida) in mid december for a beginner who has no prior experience and a weak swimmer? i do have owd cert but struggle and panic internally during scuba diving at times.
it is the monsoon season but how is the current and visibility be like?

Hi Quarer!

I'm new to this forum and freediving so don't have an awful lot of experience but I am scuba qualified and have had someone on my course that had similar feelings.

There's two things I would like to say. First of all, if you don't mind talking about it, do you know what triggers your panic attacks when doing Scuba? There is every possibility that the pressure of going to Bali along with the weather (if it affects the dive) might cause you more stress.

Secondly, I would say that you could email this question to the dive centre out in Bali, hopefully they are reputable (I don't even know them) and not convince you to go regardless. This should not happen but its worth keeping in the back of your mind. I don't think they will choose to put you in danger because it endangers them also if they have to rescue etc.

So my advice in short is this:

Think about what triggers and if you can minimise it.
Swim at your local pool and exercise to improve and build on your strength.
Contact the dive centre and see how they can help.

All the best and hope to see you in the water soon. Remember, you can do this, take your time and your worries will wash away with the deep blue.
