I've ordered myself a Beuchat Espadon 75cm to start my spearfishing adventures with! It's in the post as I type this. It was on special at my my favourite equipment store over here, Adreno, for a whole $65!!

Looking forward to sharing my adventures on here.

Edit : new gun just ARRIVED!! Adreno, shipped overnight without any priority shipping charges. Legends.

I have a Beuchat gun myself, and they're quality! Good buy.

Though, I was disappointed by the stock bands. I changed them and all is fine now.

Good luck :)

My new gun.
And yes, a VERY heavily supervised second photo, even though unloaded.

Tomorrow afternoon I hope!!
Last week I was swimming in a school of trevally, they were circling around me, bet that doesn't happen when I have my spear with me!

So I took it out today, but the conditions were terrible. Very choppy, very strong current, waves, wind. I saw two table sized fish all day. Missed one, the other was too fast for a shot. But I did find myself in an uncomfortable situation that was interesting, I looked down when I was swimming in about 1.5 metres of water and there would have been at least 12 large stingrays all laying over one another. Quite unnerving!

Well I guess that is life!
Better to wait for the ideal opportunity than wound a fish with a difficult shot.
The rays must be breeding do you think?

I've had an Espadon in the past and I loved it too. As lawstraljan16 points out above its not the most powerful gun but still a well built and very affordable workhorse. I gave it to my son on his birthday when he was 10 and he caught his first Bass with it that day. Dinner on the beach that night was very special. One little anecdote though if the spear is attached, as in connected rather than loaded... the gun will sink like a stone, we very disappointingly lost ours cos we (my son) didn't strap it to our kayak securely... went back & searched for hours in the weeds but never found it.
Hope you have as much success & good times with it as we did. Great pics by the way!

Yeah it did like to sink with the spear. Have it hooked to my float though so it's ok.

Foxfish I'm not sure, the current was ripping through that part, they were all laying dead still and usually they're on the other side of the island, deeper, but very likely, and not much fun to be that close to.

Yeah ! :) Good idea to start with a 75 cm. Beginning with a short gun will keep your focus on improving your hunting technique and studying fish behaviour , rather than on the ballistics of big shots . Enjoy Reefy spearfishing is magic .

cheers ! nice gun you bought there...

i use beauchat marlin carbon 105 . they are very good quality guns , the bands just lack a little power but when changed its an amazing gun.

happy spearing bro.

@ Alfy

I have a beauchat Marlin Carbon 115,pretty much like yours? what do you reccommend, a 1x19 mm Band or 2x16 mm bands? . Im still trying to cope with bands, since the standard band is peanuts...

Thanks,

Neil From Malta

What is the standard band?
Most guns are tested to provide the best overall performance with the factory band.
Generally speaking a single band offers a fast spear with less recoil but is normally more difficult to load than a twin band set up.

the original band is 18mm, but i have to change it since i need it with dyneema. Can you please give me some advise for what i can use to have some good range and accurate shot:

Bands - 1x19 mm with a 6.5mm shaft
1x18 mm with a 6.7mm shaft
2X16 mm with a 7mm shaft
2x14mm with a 6.7 mm shaft.....

I am very confusing... maybe they are not good what i gave you... can you please give me the best setup?

Also i am not sure about the stainless steel muzzle.. did you exchanged (with hammer head muzzle) it or left it on your gun as standard? or did you loosen it so the shaft will fit loose or you made it tight to fit clipped..

Please help me to tune my gun since i can't find the perfect setup :/

Thanks

Neil

What do you intend to shoot? what size fish & how clear is the water?

the water in malta is very clear. for now i am entering till 15m. I shoot sea bass, white sea bream, gilt head breams. sometimes nice parrotfish and groupers.

What do you suggest, in malta we have all types of waters.. rocky places especially.

twin 16mm bands @ 2.5 stretch with a 6.75mm omer sharkfin spear.

you think its better 2.5 stretch? i have the 115 marlin beauchat carbone.. you think will give me those 3.5 m accurate range? at 3X stretch will be over powered ?

Thanks for the help :)

You can always shorten the bands..but it is more expensive to make new longer ones!
Start with 2.5 & see how it feels.
