I was 10 years-old or so and my family was vacationing in Florida...

After a day at the beach I decided to walk down a bit and visit the neighboring hotel pool for a while. I met this girl in the pool and before I knew it she was kissing me! we sank underwater and I have no idea how long I was down there, it seemed like forever, but I'm going to be honest, and say it was only about 2 to 3 minutes, maybe more...

I had always been able to hold my breath for a long time, but that was amazing, expecially to a 10 year-old. No kidding.

I never saw that girl again, though I went back every year looking for her until I was about 14 or 15. What an amazing time of my life and it only lasted a few minutes.

Well, I am a man now, but I want to be that fish again and reclaim the water I once new. I'm not sure, but I do believe it is calling me back.

Where do I begin?

Actually, it is

Not to flame or anything, but Mark here is looking to join our underwater universe. I was taking the piss out of him with a mermaid story.

Mark - you should start right here on the site. Try using the search function - check all the newbie posts, also look for training tips etc. If you've got any specific questions, fire away.

Ragrds,
Riaan

Apologies, Mark. My early searches on the net for freediving related pages threw up some rather unsavoury sites and I thought that this post maybe belonged to one of them. I'm sorry for any offence I may have caused.

Happy freediving!

With a story like that you're bound to get a rather rough welcome with plenty of razzing here at DB, but it's a great community. If you weren't a newby I'd have some follow up comments for that story myself!;) All kidding aside, DB holds a wealth of information from people of all experience levels all over the world. Get familiar with the site and realize that you're reading individual perspectives and opinions. Welcome to DB!

Offense?

I thought it was pretty funny, and expected a response like that somewhere along this thread, but not so quickly!

I do search through the threads often to find out what a beginner can do to begin his path to superior breath-hold times, but every time I come across the apnea tables they don't link up, or download.

Can someone point me to a link that works so I can download the tables?

Any further advice to what steps I may take in order to progress at a fair rate in order to achieve superior times would be appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome / initiation by-the-way!
I have very thick skin and can take it as well as dish it out.

If your getting into freediving to pick up birdies then I would advise against it. They are ice cold and will cheat on you and throw you away in a second(no pun intended). I have had my beating heart ripped out of my frail chest a couple times and I am only 13 and a half years old!
