I'm not new per say to spear fishing I just need a new gun I've use a pole spear I need some thing that will get me the smaller fish around the reef like snappers hogfish and groupers but I spend a lot of time offshore trolling for dolphin but I need some that has enough power to knock down reef fish but also have enough power to take a dolphin I don't have much money but a decent chunk and I'd prefer to buy from my local shop divers direct. Have a search of the forum, we have addressed this question innumerable times. Power is not usually the issue for beginners but speargun length is. How much visibility do you have when you dive? How far away are the fish you wish to spear? How big/powerful are they? Why not visit the store and have a chat, if they are spearos themselves they can probably offer you location specific advice - if they are not spearos themselves be a little more careful.
If you are going to be hunting grouper and snappers on the reef, you would want a gun in the 90 to 120 cm range. If you want a blue water gun, 120 to 140 cm would be recommended.
If you want to pick the best size for doing both (assuming you have clear water on the reef) - then a 120 cm gun would be a very popular choice.
35 inches is too small for what you want to do. Also, dolphins in blue water do not take a whole lot of power, but often you will want the RANGE that a longer gun provides.
I don't sell through any dive shops - direct only - so if you are set on going through a local dive shop, then a MAKO gun won't be an option.

If loading is a concern, then a double-rubber muzzle & 2 notch/fin spear offers a variety of configuration options e.g. 2x16mm or 2 x14mm or 1x19mm or 1x16mm or - for the power crazed - 2x 19mm). I think Mako (& perhaps RA?) offer a triple rubber option now -- for those with a very heavy spear and plenty of spare diving time for loading
For range, I think barrel length is key. Band power is more about penetration, although both obviously effect both range & penetration.
Yes 35" is 88.9cm ~= 90cm. For UK that would be at the high end of the normal range but I reckon that might be a bit short for the gin clear waters of Florida. Dano's estimates sound reasonable to me, 110-120cm are popular sizes in South Africa.
