Fish finders

I know I'm a newby, but just been thinking has anyone ever used a fish finder to hunt. Was thinking more along the lines of bottom topography than actual fish. Just a thought, new spot no real knowledge of area. It could come in handy for depths, bottom surface and any cover. Anyhow would like your input on the matter. Cheers

Hi Dazlw, Yes, Octopus on here uses a fishfinder attached to his float. also some of us use them on kayaks. They are useful for like you say, depth and bottom topo, but not really for fish finding, except perhaps the odd shoal...
i also use mine on my dinghy for checking sand/rough ground borders.

A recorder (fish finder) is required equipment for most of our diving. With some exceptions, you need to recorder to see the topography, wreak, etc. GPS gets you very close, but I don't drop a bouy until I can see the structure on the recorder.

What kind of diving you do affects whether a recorder makes sense. We are boat diving a fair distance from shore in moderately deep water. Inshore guys could easily use land ranges, etc. I used to do that before the boat came along.

I like the idea of a fish finder on a float, as I'll be mostly diving from the shore. So does any body have that kind of rig up and like to share their knowledge of equiptment and setup.would it be able to rig it onto a torpedo float or just the raft kind? would be grateful of all information.

Fitting a Fish Finder
you just need a FF, transducer, battery [at least 2mAh, i use 7], and a waterproof container.
search for how to install in a kayak, its similar to what you want to do.
