Fish of the month/year discussion thread 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Not all scales weigh in ounces, some use only point such and such of a pound.
Wasn't the metric system introduced in the UK in the early 70s?
Maybe all entries should be in ye olde anglish too, to add that touch of real authenticity?
Just kidding, don't care really 'cos I never catch anything big enough to enter.

Dave.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Actually I quite like the length idea. as I now gut all my fish in the sea asap. Also a ruler can be included in the photo with the paper so you have proof of the length as well as the date all in one pic.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I agree, as we are meant to be more conservative minded length a good indication. Most of our minimum sizes are length based not weight based, I would rather see all fish photo's nest to a ruler, might even help in those cases of small bass being caught!

Oh ya... and another option for date besides newspaper would be good :)

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Fish vary so much in shape, even within a single species, that weight is the only fair measure in my opinion.
I think the pounds and ounces rule is to ensure all weights are easily comparable. Should we change it so all weights are metric? Personally I like pounds and ounces:).
It's the simplest thing to pick up a newspaper on the way home or even borrow one from a neighbour.
Accurate digital fish scales can be bought very cheaply from angling shops. Most fish can still be gutted at sea.Only your entry needs to be brought home intact and if you keep your scales in the car you can weigh and gut the fish before going home. The photo can show a gutted fish.
Weights were invented for the very purpose of comparing amounts. It's a bit off the subject but I like to see accurate weights in peoples trip reports anyway because I'm fascinated by who caught what, where and when. If weights are only guessed then it's easy to get optimistic about what your catch weighed. I've read many trip reports where I'd doubt an estimated weight. If the fish is weighed then there's no guesswork.
I'll shut up now before you all fall asleep.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

As i am the one to blame for this little discussion i will put in my thought. How reliable is the weight of a fish if we talk about an accuarte measurement? Some fish may have a very full gut due to feeding as another may be lighter due to be slightly malnurished. (please excuse the spelling, dyslexic!) When the scientists measure fish they usually, for general purpose, use length and age which can be determinded by scale sample, but use weight when checking feeding habits and overall condition.

I have gutted some fish which would have been massivly heavier if not gutted but if i had caught it just before they fed it would have been much lighter! It would have still been the same fish!!

Not trying to be awkward, just saying my mind. I have enough crap from stroppy people before, and i was interested to see someone who should know better bite when talk of speargun prices was mentioned. So just to be sure, i am NOT being awkward! Peace out!roflroflrofl

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Most recognized competitions allow for the fact that a Fish may have fed, and some even stipulate that if fish fall out of the mouth/gut they canot be replaced.
I had a bass last week that had 2 reasonable sized mackerel whole in it's gut.
They were so big the tails were sticking out of the gut into it's throat!
Personally I prefer the weights in Metric, it's easier to work with and more international in scope, most if not all of Europe uses metric and likewise all scientific measurements are in metric.
I am not anti imperial units but for some things metric = easier.
Just my 2c

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

All the above points have already been discussed by the staff when the rules were set up & believe me it took some time & effort to get where we are!

Overall the FOM is very successful but I guess it would be virtually impossible to keep every one happy all the time.

In fact the rules are very basic & not particularly demanding but we have to have rules for the FOM to remain a competition!

Having said that, all your remarks & ideas are noted & of course if there is enough evidence to suggest a change is necessary then we will take action.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I just reread my post, it sounds like I'm having a right old sarky grump.
Sorry, wasn't my intent.
Foxfish is right, in the end you can only have one set of rules.
If the db mods decided this was the best way, then that's fine with me.

Dave.

Just got a private message. It seems that an printed out internet daily news paper headline is not good enough for proof of date. I thought the camerons had only ever had one baby in truro and thats only just happened!!!

Looks like my entry will get bumped off again!:head

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I have a query concerning the measuring of fish.
It's that trouble-maker Gutshot's fault.
When I used to be a keen salmon and trout angler, the fish were always measured from the snout to the fork of the tail.
But sea fish seem to be measured from the snout to the end of the tail.
My question is; is there an official recommendation for the measuring of sea fish?

I feel this is quite important because most fish have a minimum size and the difference between the fork and tip of the tail could mean the difference between a legal and an illegal one.
Of course all us spearos only shoot way above min' size fish but I'd still like to know the answer.

Dave.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I'm pretty sure it's from tip of snout to fork of tail. I noticed that too but didn't want to be a wind uproflroflrofl.
You're right though, if measuring to decide if a fish is legal to take then this would be important.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

For enforcement purposes total length is used.
Fork length is also used but more for certain scientific purposes.

I stand corrected but if the tail is closed it's longer than when it's fully opened out so how is the measurement taken?

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

From the snout to the tip of the tail fin.
See the pic of the Jack? Thats a measuring board that we use to measure fish (lots of fish!) and the nose is butted up against the vertical part. the tail fin can be closed up but the overall reading wn't be any longer than the very tip of the tail fin.

Regarding the Jack I had a positive ID from a Marine scientist in the USA.

:Hi Huan

Sorry for the delay in answering your e-mail. The photographed fish is definitely Seriola rivoliana. The best published key to Seriola known from the northeastern Atlantic is in volume three of Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean (1986) Whitehead, P.J.P. et al., editors, UNESCO. This species has been reliably recorded from England but yours is possibly the first record for Ireland. Thank you for calling it to my attention.

Sincerely,

William F. Smith-Vaniz

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Wow i didn't know you could measure to the tip of the tail, I always measure from the fork. Does that count for legal fish sizes as far as the fisheries people are concerned? I assume that's what you mean by 'enforcement purposes'?
