Do any PEOPLE post on here anymore??? With all the NEWS and ARTICLE posts, not much room for live folks.

Anyway, what do you (I'm not talking to BOTS) to stay in shape of diving? I'm scheduled to do a 2K open water swim in May but I prefer weight training. I pool swim all the time and have been training for the OW swim but we're thinking of going to Bonaire in May and I'm thinking about mixing with fin training.

I dont scuba dive any more so I don't look on this section, but in any case I run 3 or 4 times per week equaling approx 20 to 50 kms, barefoot.
I also do 5 sets of 8 chinups with 18 lbs on a belt 1/week. On another day I do 5 sets of 15 full body dips with the same belt on.
I stretch after running. I meditate every day 3 or 4 times.

I dont swim at all other than spearfishing in cold water gear.
Best of luck in your swim and holiday!

Like Erik, I'm a freediver, but used to do a lot of scuba. Sounds like you are doing what you need to do. Scuba mostly requires reasonable endurance with enough strength to handle the gear easily. Laps for cardio and weight training should more than cover it.

I'm old enough(60) to have no choice but to exercise. I have been swimming for cardio a 2/3 times a week, apnea training in the pool at least one day a week and working with light weights a little. I just discovered that some strength has been slipping away and am upping my weight training. Last thursday was a big surf day in SE Florida and I was having trouble matching speeds with the waves. Got tired way too early.

I'm 71, so I do feel a need to work out. However, while I hesitate to start this fire again, I wouldn't have to work out nearly as much if I were still scuba diving instead of freediving. I don't think scuba diving requires much fitness, but I guess its all relative. I think my grandfather was fit enough to scuba dive, but of course now he is dead and I'm the grandfather.

But to more directly answer your question, I weight train, upper and lower body, every third day unless spearfishing interferes, run around 5 miles twice a week, and ride the bike or the stationary bike on the other days. I never do any swimming except when I'm diving.

I've been lifting weights off and on for about 55 years, and I always took strength for granted. But like cdavis, I find that strength is slipping away, and I have work to slow the decline. I need to be able to cock that big gun and muscle up onto the swimstep.

Wow, great to know that people are actually out there! I'm 56 so I can relate to what cdavis and Bill were saying. WISH I lived somewhere that I could go out and go spearfishing in the ocean at will. :vangry On the other hand, no hurricanes here! Our annual trips are my only shot. I still do chins, clean and presses and other stuff but the nagging little aches and pains reduce my options at times.

Thanks!

YOGA! i may be a little younger than most but i have found that yoga has helped me to know end, and we have a lot of more mature peoploe in our classes included a couple less limbs, who find it reduces the aches and pains to know ened and also strengthens all of the core muscles which we use everyday for our sport.

low impact and a really good work out. if i could only do one training type this would be it. i know it sounds a bit hippy like but ifyou get past that it is a phenominal workout.

DUDE, I wrote a reply to your post about YOGA but I deleted it... didn't want to sound negative. Coincidentally, I then saw a piece on the news about a local sports team using a YOGA trainer and I was AWED!!! He had some really kick a$$ moves in there that were totally COOL! I guess it depends on your instructor.

Thanks!

understandable.

get alot of strange lookis from people when you say you practise yoga....

provided you get a good teacher, its incredible. i know a coiuple of guys in my class in there 70's that are stronger and fitter than most people my age (26).

one in particular springs around like he's on speed its incredible to watch, then you talk to them and they'll casully say something about a broken back/ busted hip/etc etc that would normally prevent someone from doing anything physical at all let alone what these guys do.

like i daid if you can get past the hippy/religious aspect of it the work out leaves any gym workout or swim for dead.

I go to a yoga class occasionally with my wife. It "looks" pretty easy. I have only minimal problem with the positions and it only occasionally feels strenuous (its a pretty easy class), but I'm tired at the end of it and the next morning I often feel like I got hit by a truck. DD is right, it is one heck of a workout, especially for core and flexibility.

I'm not that fat as you are thinking... I want to gain weight and scuba would help me I guess... I'm enjoying it though I'm not really good at it as I'm a beginner... amazon affiliate forum

Who said you were fat? I don't see a previous post under that username.

You're a "hard gainer." My son is the same way and we worked pretty hard in the weight room and with lots of protein powder to get pretty big but, as soon as he stopped, the weight/muscle started to leave. I have the opposite problem but we all have to work at it, one way or the other.

Not sure how SCUBA would help.
