Hi all

Cant seem to find my ideal floatline. Diving between 10 and 20m coastal reef. Tried thick and thin lines. Attached to the gun and deployed separately on a weight once on location. Thick are too much drag but less tangle and thin seem to tangle on me. Anyone use the new omer bungee floatline? Dont want to add another to the growing collection unless its any cop.

Any home made suggestion?? DIY always appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand the problem, but I use a 120 foot Neptonics float line that is thinner than his standard, and it works great. It slides through the kelp so that I don’t know that its there, doesn't tangle, and when used with a big float in open water, the thinner line causes less drag in current so that its less likely to be pulled under.

I rig it Hawaiian breakaway style.

No real problem with the lines i have. Just trying to find something thats easy to handle in the water. Maybe Im just fussy. Thanks for the info on the Neptonics. I'll check it out.

I always use Rob allen tho i just got a pelaj and really like it. It float well and is nice and thin.

well i ordered the omer bungee float line from Scubazar for 12 euros. Not bad I thought. I will be testing soon and will let you know.

one tip that might help you is to swim with the gun in one hand and several loops of excess floatline in the other...this way there is less slack to tangle, you have less liklihood of draggin into or around another diver or debris and you can release the line as you dive to prevent any drag at all.

once I started to do this I found I could use my 100' floatline in 35' of water when I used to have to bring a shorter one.

dive safely

Thanks for the tip mate. Will give it a try this weekend.

Cheers...Dan..

what are you hunting?? a reel is a good option but when you still need a float you could cary one around and anchor it when your hunting with a small fishing weight less than 1 lb

The advantage of that is that you will not have a float line that fish could be potentially scared of. it will allow you to use thicker, stronger more tangle resistant lines without having the problem of drag.
I only use this when hunting with my gun that has a reel.

However I have never herd of people doing this outside of hawaii. it could be the reef diving we do that lends it's self to this technique.

what do you guy's think???

i personally dont like reels because they just seem tangle prone to me...I think it is a lot of personal preferrence, but I have certainly anchored my support float or yak and then dove with neither Fl or reel, just when hunting small fish like little goats or mangos.

i also like the polespear for those occasions..although I do rig a floatline to my pole often too

Ok tried the bungee floatline today. No tangles and easy to handle. Although as I dive and the bungee stretches I need to fin harder to counteract the stretch of the bungee. Once the float is above me this problem stops. But no snatching on the gun once on the bottom. So success really. Very compact and cheap so i would say thumbs up. Going to try the other suggestions above next time. Cheers......

hi there i made a float hose with 200 kg monofilament line inside a clear 6mm internal daiameter hose with the ends sealed up this doesn't tangle and slides over rocks without snaging i use this atached to the gun and works as good as anything i can buy in nz
it cost $30 nz dollars to make and about 30 minutesof my time iv'e used this line now for two years now with no leaks or problems

nice shrek, that is how I made mine as well...I'm quite happy with it...I do find though, that too much line for the depth you are diving is a pain and you can combat that by keeping the excess in your non-gun hand.

how did you get the line memory out of the mono? mine do this wierd twisting thing at one end and I assume it was the mono memory, any tips to fix that on my next floatline?

firstly i have a line holder on my float board to shorten it up when diving in the shallows
when diving in current the size of the float has more todo with line angle than anything else so i use a small bullet float in the curent
as for line memory it could just be the line you used when buying line make sure it's not come from a small diameter spool
when i put my line together i set it up so there's a little bit of tention on the mono inside the hose and this semms to work several of my friends now have these lines and none are having problems with memory
