Float line on a Polespear

I was wondering do i need a line connecting my polespear to me so that if the fish takes off with it it wont leave...

I dont wanna lost my spear and i dont know how it works, can a fish still swim if you dont get a kill shot? Does the Spear just sink them?
 
I wouldn't connect it directly to me. It could be the end of you. ; o

You can make a band that is too long, then tie a knot at the end of the bandswith an overhand knot. Then connect it to a float line. You can always drop it if you need to, and pull it up from the surface.

If you don't want to use a float line, then losing the spear is better than losing you.

Ohh so kind of like "Manny Puigs" Pole Spear if you know what i mean?, what if my band is shorter and i just want to tie it onto the band directly?
 
I dont think any fish is gonna run off with you!!
Just tie a line about 5-6 feet off the end of your pole spear and make a wrist strap. Any fish up to about 40 lbs should not be able to swim stronger thna you, especially with a spear in him, wherever it may be.

I have a tuna clip with a cord on it and I half hitch it to my pole spear's bungee, near the hole in the spear. Then I clip the tuna clip to the floatline.
 
the problem with tying it to you, isnt so much the fish "swimming off with you", but i think more about the fish just not letting you get to the surface. kinda a bad thing..

although you may be able to swim harder than the fish, but you'll be burnin a lot of energy. If you are gonna tie to yourself, make it either extra extra long (ie longer than the water is deep), or get a reel type line. Ive seen belt versions of them.
 
depending on the type of pole spear you have will determine how you can attach the float line. If you have a fiberglass pole,it would be possible to drill a hole into through it (about the same size as the hole for the band. And to answer your question..the fish can swim off with the spear but just not too far for a reasonably sized fish. I have shot a some big corbina in San Diego, dropped the spear then picked it up and shot it after it got of the barb.
 
My polespear is hallow aluminum and the only way to connect it is to attatch a loop of surgical tubing to the end.
I just dont wanna loose my spear :]]]
 

I don't even want to get into the main subject of the thread, but I have to differ with that statement.

I have had a 15 pound yellowtail pull me down repeatedly. It could swim stronger than I can.


Fish swim better than we do.

And here is a 27 pound yellowtail another friend got a week ago. He tried his best to short-line it, but couldn't keep it from getting to the bottom at 55 feet and wrapping in the kelp. It took us 30 minutes to get it out, and we had a hell of a time.

It seems like I'm contradicting half the advice that this kid gets, but he is only 15, and I think he is getting a lot of bad information. In this case, these yellowtail are right in his back yard, but I'm sure a lot of other fish less than 40 pounds can swim much better than he can.

Not sure if your drawing infers that you are wanting to tie a loop on to the existing loop, but if your going to buy tubing consider this method:

 
I cant just use a regular surgial tubing because the hole that the tubing goes through is only wide wnough to fit 2 peices of small rope/twine ti connect the "Spear band"

I was just gonna tie a loop around the "Polespear band" that is already on there

I just had the idea that maybe ill just drill a new hole into the alluminum to do full surgial tubing
 
You can still add a longer piece of tubing to knot. Get a piece of cord just like the one that is on there now. Tie a knot in the end and insert it into the new longer tubing/band. pass the cord through the pole spear and tie another knot and insert in into the other end of the tubing. Now it's just like a wishbone on a regular speargun, so you tie a constrictor knot on the band ends to hold the knot in the tubing.

Not exactly. No youtube video that I could find, so let me see if I can put it to words.

1) Take two pieces of tubing longer than you think you need to make the two loops and their knots.

2) Take a piece of cord (Dyneema, Spectra, nylon whatever, just strong cord about 4mm thick I guess) about... hmmm.... 6 - 8 inches long

3) Tie a big knot in each end of the cord, double overhand knot or something (someone else may have better knots or cord choices)

4) Insert one end of the cord into the one piece of tubing and tie a constrictor knot (as described above)

5) insert the other end of the cord into the other piece of tubing and secure with a constrictor knot

What you have know is 2 pieces of tubing connected by the cord

6) Fold the cord in half (the two pieces of tubing are hanging side by side)

7) Insert the cord into the pole spear so the out the other side is a loop

8) Take the free ends of the tubing and pass them through that loop and pull them down tight so the cord is now half hitched around the pole spear.

You Now have the two band hanging from the end of the pole spear.

9) Tie your first overhand knot to make the big loop the size you need

10) Once you find the length you like, tie the second over hand knot to create the smaller loop.

11) Once you have that to proper length trim the free ends of tubing


IF I have time tonight I will try to take and add pictures to illustrate the steps tonight

Measure the tubing you have now. It is probably a good size. I have not re-banded my polespear yet, so I'm not sure. I will measure my band when I get home. I'll have to order a stretch of tubing too, or pick it up when I get to Florida.
 
Ohhh the tubing i have now, Its like not sugical tubing its like thick rubber.
Heres a few pics of my current band, never been used in the ocean, only swimming pole...

I dont know how to meassure that, dont you gotta messured the wall size?

You'll need inside and outside diameters. The good shops will help you with recommendations if your not sure.

If I was reworking your spear there, I would remove those steel crimps holding the cord into the tubing and tie the new rubber onto that cord. The constrictor knots I mentioned would act like those steel crimps.

If you cut the your current band (don't do it, this is an example) you would have the first part of what I was talking about, right before you tie the overhand knots in the bands.
