Florida Internship

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I dont. Its just that facebook has so much more you can do with it. I find myspace to be much more "user friendly" its like mac vs pc. Nowadays around here though, no ones on myspace anymore, so I had to make the conversion.

Hey Forrest, is that a species of Mackerel, and a Yellowtail? Which Key is your home basecamp?

Yea the one long one is a spanish mackeral, and the other is a kind of jack, I dont know which. I called it an ulua, because thats the hawaiian name for giant trevally (or jack) and just dumped it with that name I guess. Im actually living in Fort Meyers Florida right now.

OOPS, I should have read all the posts first. Still the gulf area has lots of fish! Which speargun do you have? Check out some of the boat cuts for accessibility and clearer water. Keep posting pictures

Cool thanks for the tips! It rained yesterday, so shoreline vis was ***** hence the R&R fishing. I was going to take my new Rob Allen Tuna, and then discovered that my suitcase was not 80cm long. If I do go spearing Im going to borrow some guns from a friend that lives down here. And I better be able to after lugging my cressi gara's as a carry on item. :head

..............sadly fleshy only has 13 different guns to select from .

rofl

Reactions: waldo and fleshy
Jim I didnt know you were volunteering! My friends just got upgraded. rofl We will have to see. I really dont mind bad vis, and not much in the means of structure, which is a lot of the complaints im hearing from divers down around here. Im just going to dink and dunk around I think, maybe nail some mullet, everything else Ive been catching R&R, cept for the snookies :t

Jeez fleshy! You don't need a speargun down here, .................we just reach down off the docks and grab the biggest one we see!

Jim, is this in naples? Because if it is, I can definatly make a sunday trip down there. (Possibly) gas isnt cheap, and Id have to borrow my brothers car...

This past weekend I got out for a little bit of spearing. I shot three spadefish, and three sheepshead. All of the shots were straight through the operculum (the gill cover plate), except for one, which was through the top of the head, imediatly behind the eyesocket. We dove off of a mangrove swamp. We stood right next to the roots in about 4 FOW, and immediatly infront of us the water droped down to 15' in a channel with ripping current, and thats where all the spearing took place. All the fish were shot in 15' of water, and 4' visibility. I also saw a lot of crevalle jacks, who actually were schooling around me on the bottom during one dive, unfortunatly I did not have the gun at that point. My dive buddy saw a bull shark, we each took two more dives, and then headed out. Fish were great! The spades had a good, clean taste, dispite looking like carp meat while we were cleaning them. The sheepshead actually do taste like chicken almost.

Ha ha, nice shooting fleshy! How you doin in Florida?

btw thanks for Fandres number, i didnt call him but i might someday...

Yes, you are correct. Note to others; just because you are spearing with a florida native does NOT mean he/she will remember all the rules. My bad, thanks for catching it. Those fish were close, but I bet there wernt quite there. Fortunatly we had a fish fry, so the evidence has been disposed of! rofl

those are some nice fish, fleshy, hey you get back from florida today don't you.

Well whadya know, its one of the top five baums of all time, BRAD BAUM! Since IL diver has taken offense to my joking attitude towards killing of the sheepshead I will clarify my situation further. I was diving/spearing with a florida native, and a florida resident. Both are active fishermen, and neither one knew about that size limit. I appreciate whopperheads wisdom, and now know for the future, but that doesnt mean I should regurgatate the remains of a couple fillets into the gulf of mexico.

yea, i just made the account today, idont know those fish look fine to me.

Realistically they were all probably 8-9" long. Unfortunately, they were undersized for the rules and regs of Florida fishing, and I didnt know that until whopperhead told me so. Its lucky I checked the spearing regs that day, otherwise I might have made a HUGE booboo and shot one of the massive permit that kept swimming down the channel. Do you have any pictures of that huge rock bass you got brad?

this is the picture of my rock bass and my first fish.

For everyones information, the first picture is brads little brother holding the fish. Thats a really big rockbass brad, good job! If there are bigger ones down there, we have a chance to beat the record of 2.1lbs. I wish you would have weighed that one.

flesh that isnt close to the record because if it is then we will be having contests for the rest of the year for who can shoot the record rock bass.. which will prolly be me so dont try
