Food food food what should we eat

This thread is for ideas on days of pool or dive training on what to eat and what not to. I.e porridge 2 hours before is a no no and beans to it's not nice when you burping beans and porridge while praticing :)
 
I don't have any specific ideas about what food you should or should not eat. But I guess it have been mentioned before on this forum, that from a safety point of view you should probably not dive with low carbohydrate stores.

The two studies below is on that topic:

Low carbohydrates stores (caused by fasting or prolonged exercise) could lead to lower oxygen levels at the end of a breath-hold, possibly increasing the risk for black-out. This is because lipid metabolism requires more oxygen than carbohydrate-based metabolism.

Thomas Schiffer is a freediver with years of experience and also a researcher in nutrition. He has sofar regularly done studies, to the joy of Swedish freedivers, who gladly come to the lab to hold their breath :)

I'm a sucker for a big bowl of porridge on the morning of diving days, about 3.5 hours before top time.
Fruits, seeds and other alkalinising foods immediately after, followed by more vegetables and carbs.
 
What would You suggest Will if someone has 2 official tops in one day? Like in a pool competitons. Static in the morning, Dynamic 4-6 hours later?

I personally think that only 1 performance can be Your maximum on a single day, however pool competitions nowadays contain 2 disciplines on a signle day.....and we have to deal with it...what would be the best to eat then??

Personally I like to have empty stomach before static, really empty..In the morning I eat only banana, or nothing, but I still don't know what to eat after Static to prepare well for Dynamic. Porridge with dry fruits, followed by some bananas, oranges?

I think this study is doubtful. What we can see is that after consumption of carbohydrates, subjects got ~25 sec earlier contractions, and in the end they just wrote that at MBP (maximum break point), subjects with carbs consumption had higher SpO(2) than subjects fasting for 14-18h.. It's doubtful because it doesn't say if MBP was at the same ammount of time..If subjects got earlier contractions it could mean that they have terminated they apneas earlier than "fasting subjects". Furthermore, fasting subjects due to later contractions and probably more gentle one's, could have done longer apnea to lower oxygen levels at MBP.

What I can agree with is that after fasting there is more risk to get BO, because it's easier to push Yourself further:blackeye

I think you're right - two maximums in one day will always mean that the second one suffers.
I would eat just a simple bowl of carbs that is easy to digest, such as porridge, perhaps with a handful of alkalizing seeds like Chia seeds which will help recover from the static.

Great tip with the seeds Will I normally put a tone of honey on porridge :O also started eating 4-5 hours before what about alpen Any good or to heavy folks
 
In Spain porridge is not known, so I was wondering (after looking for some recipes) if an Spanish famous dessert like the "Rice with milk", could do the same: Rice, milk, sugar, cinnamon...
 
I like to have some nice herbal tea in the morning, with a banana or two. If the OT is 4 hours away, than I would eat some whole grain bread with honey and Dutch cheese. By the time of the OT this food will be processed and thus won't cost me energy.

After the static performance (which I plan to be early), I swim a little to help recover. I drink warm herbal tea and eat an orange (anti-oxidants) and some white bread with honey (easy digestion) and maybe a banana. Lay down under a blanket and sleep until - 20min for the next OT.

After the final performance I like a big hot chocolate (made of raw ingredients: cacao, unrefined cane sugar and organic full milk) - good anti-oxidant, then carbs, protein, veggies and sleep.

I like porridge too, but find that the milk induces gas production.

Porridge is just boiled ground oats (avena).

Maybe when I was Googleing the recipe I found a few more sophisticated ones :t

Sounds like a bit "tough" to eat, a little bit "dry"...

Thanks for the info, we´ll give it a try.
 
If you use almond or rice milk then it stays creamy without the problems of dairy food.
