I had some fun with my signature today. How do we feel about these animated GIFs in the signatures? Cool personal touch? Annoying? Fun? Cute? Lame?

Well, your animated signature doesn't seem to work. On the other hand, I've seen some delightfully scandalous moving avatars . . .

It does seem to have stopped working. I'll try uploading it to a personal server.

yet another person with a lot of free time :p
just kidding, nice work

I like your avatar. It seems like some techno-guru meditating/doing apnea (well, it is a freediving forum).

Thanks! The avatar is actually a picture of me that I added some photoshop effects to.

i saw that... very cool..... any lessons??

There are actually some very nice little free applications floating around the internet that allow you to make animated gifs like that from other pictures that you have. I can't remember which one I used.

Anyhow, just take a fun picture of yourself and apply some of the built in Photoshop art effects. Even a first time Photoshop user can get some cool effects out of the built-in stuff. Throw them into the gif animator. And presto! An avatar to impress your friends.

With a little practice, you can learn to take the background out of pictures and add some extra flare. Not to mention make your skin glow. (See below)

They both look cool, but personally I find anything that "moves" on the edges of my FOV distracting, especially when trying to read a long text. On some websites it's virtually impossible to read anything and all you get is a headache...

But your avatar and signature are still on the conservative side, I've seen some which take about half a page. Looks pretty silly when the post is one or two lines and then the rest of the page is avatar or signature...Tell's something of a persons ego, no? :)

Anyway, nice work.

Yeah, I know the pages you are talking about. Lot's of color, blinking text, animated pictures, scrolling stuff. I just thought the dolphin was cute. I'm sure I'll get tired of it soon enough. :)

Concerning the long signatures, I have seen some forums where members get sort of crazy with them. We are so civilized here at deeper blue.

very nice!!

now i just need the physique :hmm

Signature wise we have no real policy but try to keep flashing elements down to a minimum as it can be very distracting.

I'll be formalising a policy on Avatars and Signatures in the next few weeks.
