Hi, I live in oregon. I'm considering a freediving course here. It is an SSI freediving course. I'm wondering if any of you have heard of SSI and would you recommend them?

The quality of the course and your experience greatly depend upon you and your teacher.

My impression is that most schooling 'systems' teach the techniques needed to get numbers. On the other hand Freediving is so much more then just numbers and methods.

I think a good teacher is a very good listener and facilitator that is able to have you experience and learn from deep insights and principles.

Take a moment for yourself and write down what you think freediving can be. Write down what you like to explore and learn. Sleep over it.

Give the teacher a call, and ask him/her the same questions. Listen. Ask for an introduction if you have some reservations, perhaps there is a colleague that's a better match.

Enjoy,

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

Thanks Kars, I took your advice. It was very helpful. It was good for me to reexamine my goals. When I questioned the instructor, I was focused and prepared.

I did an SSI level 2 course last year and I couldn't have been happier. Very thorough course. But yes, it really does come down to the teacher!

Sorry Amber, I have to disagree with your statement: "But yes, it really does come down to the teacher!"

My point is that it depends on both the teacher AND the student.

Remember that opposed to schooling, which is forced, this education is YOUR OWN FREE CHOICE. With a choice comes responsibility, at least to your own conscious. So I think it is important to put some effort in making a satisfying choice, instead of only relying on luck. For me it's a matter of self respect.

Mind you that through freediving I came to know myself much better, and also learned to appreciate myself in new ways.

Oh definitely Kars! All I meant was that when signing up for a course I believe that an experienced instructor makes more of a difference than which course you choose (Aida, SSI... etc)
I have done an Aida and an SSI course and they were both brilliant courses because I had teachers who knew what they were doing and who I liked and could trust.
But maybe it was also because I was such a good student :D

I just charge a crapload so that the student is forced into listening, works a treat.

Reefy... time for some re-education sonny! You were my greatest challenge ;)

Mike - it's great your doing some research into your course and Kars is absolutely right.

The first thing I would ask the instructor is "how long have you been freediving?". The second thing I would ask them is "why did you get into freediving?". You'll be able to figure it out from there (hint: a true freediver is hopelessly addicted to it and you will have trouble shutting them up).

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Ben
