Some impressive divers and stories about a piece of gear every serious freediver should have. Thanks Bill. One more to add:
Mine doesn't get much use, only when I'm diving where the vis is not top to bottom or with a diving buddy who is not fully trained, but it is truly great for " peace of mind." Use it a while and it will also show you see how easy it is to exceed your limits. I was diving with the timer set at 2:05 (very relaxed place, 15 ft vis). For me, in this particular place, that is stretching it just a little bit, but with the vest, a drop line and a couple of alert dive buddys, it seemed ok . The dives got deeper and deeper, felt great. The last dive felt fabulous, almost no sense of need to breathe, but I suddenly realized I'd been down quite a while, time to surface. I went up slow, it seemed so easy, until I was about 40 ft from the surface and my watch said 1:55. Oops. too slow. The gas charge went off about 5 ft from the surface and my buddys and I had a good laugh.
But what would have happened if I had stayed down as long as it felt comfortable and had no FRV?
