Anyone have any recommendations on basic/intro freediving training available in the Southern California area? I'm aware of the Performance Freediving clinics (http://www.performancefreediving.com/courses/upcoming.html), and they look pretty good, albeit expensive ($345 for two days...YIKES !!). My intent is only to learn how to do skindiving the correct way, and to greatly improve my breatholding capability. No interest in competitive freediving.

Right now my best static times are around 1:30 to 2:00, and my best dynamics (swimming underwater) are, on a really good day, around 40 seconds. I'd love to get a couple of minutes underwater while skindiving.

Any advice or recommendations? thanks.

It's a few bucks, agreed, but it's well worth it. Their focus is not specifically on competition, it's safety first, then techniques to extend bottom time, streamlining etc.
Anyone who takes that course will be a better diver, and I really don't think there are any cheaper options. If you could go diving with a more experienced diver, you will learn a lot too. Where you are there must be a spearo club that you could go and hang out with, even if you're not hunting. Some of the best all-round freedivers I have met are spearos.
Good luck and safe diving,
Erik Y.

I resently did a class with Performance Freeding and believe me I would never have gotten the knowldge that I did from just getting out with other divers. You learn a lot about what is happening to your body, how to take advantage of what is happening to you so you can improve your boottom times. Also doing everything safely so you get to go out and dive another day. It's money well spent.

How about taking a course in Baja.

Take a look to FREEDIVERS

The place is beutiful and the classes are very good.

You can read this articles MEXICO I and read some articles from the Solomons here at DB.

Cheers
