There's been a little bit of discussion on the forum about the notion that freedivers are a little bit cheap when it comes to parting with their well earned cash. I personally agree with this stereotype. Though there are some noteable exceptions around the world, many of the freedivers i've observed fall into the following categories :are quite careful with their spending, a little bit on the tight side, those whose wetsuits are 95% neoprene glue, stinges that live on pot noodles and marmite, and those that can barter an Egyptian girl down from USD$10 down to AUS$0.20 (you know who you are :D )

I've always (well until this year) had a good steady income and a bit of cash to throw at my favourite pastime (translate: obsession), so whenever reasonable i've done what I could (like a few people I feel morally obliged to throw a bit of money into the sport to support it... though not too much as there's 2 of us making the decisions). Andy Ross organised Seb Murat to come to Sydney a couple of years back for a course and I felt that this was way more important than the elios wetsuit I was eyeing off at the time (still do, it was money well spent).

Anyway the talk on the forums of us being tighter than a frog's ass got me thinking - I bet we've all spent a lot more money than we realise. I have a bit of kit around but the real expense lies in transport and accommodation to the comps i've attended. So i'm making a list of every freediving cent i've spent that I can think of. I want everyone else to do the same, lets see how much we really spend? Write it all down, convert it to Euro and we'll compare notes. I'll put mine down now but i'll edit it over the next few days to get it to Euros and as I remember more. I have a suspicion that Eric Fattah will win this by a landslide but let's see. Oh yeah and Stephan Whelan can't put down DeeperBlue as a freediving cost :D

Benny's money pit for the last 3 years:
First fins - AUD$240
First Wetsuit - AUD$250

Ok... that's all the aussie stuff I can think of, almost AUD$2,500! Now - since the move to London....

Ok, that's all the English stuff I can think of....roughly EUR$5k!!!!! And that doesn't include any of the overseas comps yet, which i'll work out tonight... so much for being a pure, free, cheap sport, what a depressing exercise!

Enough with me.... what about you lot?

Well - if I can't put down DB then Eric can't put down F1/X1 development costs ;-)

One interesting note is that we see a lot of people come through our courses into freediving who have (a)no interest in these forums (b)no interest in competitions. Based on what i've seen some of them spend I'd say they have some cash to burn however I doubt that group would ever be very well represented on the forums.

Hey, this is fun :)

Since 2004 I've (I'm notoriously loose with cash. That I'd probably talk that egyptian girl UP to $20)

Bought 4 wetsuits ~1000e
Got a Suunto D3 + servicing ~400e
Owned 4 monofins ~800e
2 pairs of longfins ~300e
Dozen or so masks + nirvana2 fluidgoggles ~600e
Different adhesives and materials, spare parts etc oh I don't know...Alot, 500e?
Spearguns 300e
4 or so torches ~200e
a couple of main lights (canister) ~500e
Belts, knives, weights, neckweights, leadshot ~200e
Books, dvd's, magazines ~500e
Certifications and fees ...Oh man, safe to say several k, let's say 2000e
Donations :) some 300e
Ropes, buoys, lanyards etc. 400e
Cameras and accessories 1500e

Travelling - oh I don't know probably 5-7k is not far off...But I don't think that's really fair to include. Also not counting gas which I have burned a lot of for diving...

Hmm, adding all that up I'm starting to understand why we have no speakable savings despite having a decent income :) 9500e without travelling and anywhere from 15000 to 17000 with. Oh man...

It's scary isn't it. For the last 12 months neither my wife nor I have been working at the same time (till yesterday) so we've been struggling off the one income, which has made it all the more noticeable that there's less "play" money around.

And reading yours and Stephans comments has reminded me of a couple of things too, I didn't include spearing stuff, probable AUD$500 but i'll leave that out for now...

The good new is, about half of the crap I've bought I don't even use, because they were, well crap. So if anyone knows what they're doing instead of trying to "re-invent the wheel", they'd probably get away at least half cheaper.

Damn Im kinda sceptical to put it all down here, the shock is probably gonna be severe :D
But here we go:
Wetsuit 1 - R 1900
Wetsuit 2 - R 2000
Gun 1 - R 900
Gun 2 - R 650
1st mask - R 350 ( Broke )
2nd mask - R100 ( Good deal rofl)
Omer Alien Mask - R 450

Knifes floats and ropes - R500
DIY jobs - R 600
Gloves - R 150
Booties - R80
Fins - R980
Club Fees - R150 per year for 3 years = R450
Shark Sheild - R 3500
Kit Bag - R 50 ( Another good deal rofl)
Second skins - R 500
Weight belts and weights - R400
Traveling and such over the last 3 years, a rough estimate at about R6000.
Good God thats R19260.00. Faaaark
@ R 09.72 for 1 euro = 1981.48 euro

I flew to Hawaii to do a freediving course with Mandy and Kirk. the trip alone cost me 10000 dirhams (inlcuding hotel) and plus the food and course costs :crutch
worth it though.

Sorry 10000 dirhams = 2,723.40 USD plus all the phone calls to some loser i was going out with :vangry

I hope to get a snorkel for Christmas but I did buy a new gun last month so I'm not quite as cheap as I could have been.

Equipment

Elios Suit – $400 USD
OMER ICE Fins - $400 USD
OMER Alien - $60 USD
Weight Belt - $20 USD
Gloves - $38 CDN
OMER socks - $20
Lead Weight - $17 (Hawaii), $40 (UK) = $57

Total - $995 for equipment USD…. Euros = 702…. Not bad at all.

Accommodations - $300 (Hotel) + $600 (Time-Share) = $900
Freediving Course - $600
Transportation - $40

United Kingdom
Flight - $1 000

Competition - $80
Transportation - $140

$3884 USD = 2,743 Euros. Wow every penny well spent..

Oh boy. What a thread. I really hope that Eric doesn't see it. He's going to make you all cry... I think the monofins he purchased in 2000/2001 alone will be about $2500 US at least. Then there's the Neptune Safety system....

I've sold my soul to the devil(or one of his reps) several times in order to finance freediving gear. I am way too good to stay in hell and they generally end up putting my soul up on ebay. I then buy it back and re-sell it. They got me flagged down there now but between that and my side-job as an enforcer for Wal-mart I've pretty much got all the gear I need. I've also been working out a deal with Mark Labocetta to help him with a bullfrog infestation near his warehouse. (reminds me of that David Bromberg tune 'Did you ever wake up with bullfrogs on your mind?')

I sold a bunch of discarded 19inch crt monitors to finance my first elios suit. I rely almost exclusively on divine grace to finance my freediving.

I'm a Scotsman not a stereotype. Spent more than I have or could afford on hobbies and will continue in the same way... just don't expect Me to get a round in.

Could you please clarify 'helping with a bullfrog infestation' part? Did you
- infest his warehouse
- infest and then helped to clean
- helped to clean only

On a serious note, I spent some medium bucks on my gear but being a cheap skate, I actually had to pay twice for the same item a couple of times. My last accomplishment is a mail order purchase from Italy where they managed to send me TWO DIFFERENT OMER PEGASO fins. So I am considering a surgery to weaken one of my calf muscles. Otherwise I will be swimming in circles.

You should get your Pegasos here in the USA - then you can go right on down to Norfolk and see the bullfrogs for yourself. (seriously - it's illegal for omer dealers from outside the US to sell to you)

Yes, I know. I contacted your bullfrog-infested buddy Mark about availability and a price quote but he did not bother to answer. So I had to search for an alternative routes. And now I am having fun exchanging e-mails with somebody whose English is only slightly better than my Italian.
In general European diving gear has a ridiculous mark-up here in the US and now when the Euro is so strong, the prices will be just plain crazy. So I sincerely hope that you are all set with your gear needs for an immediate future (I read about your family situation here on the forum so I am speaking from the bottom of my heart). I know that I will need a new wetsuit since my Elios is too thin plus I am one of those few unclucky ones whose Elios has a LOUSY fit (jacket).

Vrokhlenko, who were the idiots who sent you a pair of two different fins?
(and back to the question: I'm a cheap b,,,d: half of my gear is bought used, or from special offers, or from stock clearance. Last items I bought new were Rekord 3 fins and XXV Gold gun. After a few weeks, some dick stole them from my bag on the beach: he's the cheapest bastard of them all bastard bastard bastard GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I/we spent £950 last year on maintaining/building the SaltFree platform alone..... the rest I can't even bear to think about.....

While my term for those people is even less politically correct than yours, I will withhold this information for now. They promised that they will send me the proper fin so I will give them a chance. Otherwise the mighty MasterCard will be involved. In their defense Pegaso blades differ in stiffness and in color but the color variation is slight. Nevertheless that mistake should have never been made.

Mark is pretty good about replying, but he gets swamped sometimes what with all those bullfrogs, and the damned singing catfish - but better than him is our pal JimDoe2you here on DB - he is an Omer dealer and the very embodiment of reliability. If you think in terms of volume - its better to work with a dealer for timely replies.

In general I have at least two of everything now :)

Heres my list :)
Two sphera masks
Two Technisub Marina Masks (favs)
One Cressi Matrix
One Cressi Matrix Prescription (started using contacts for diving)
One Omer Alien Prescription
One Impulse III snork
One Riffe STable Snork
One Impulse II snork (fav)
One pair Omer Ice fins (Fav bifins)
One Pair Omer Millenium Runners
One Waterway Wings Nemo Sprint (aka 'the precious')
One Waterway Wings Nemo Soft
One Omer rubber belt
Various weights
one 3 mil plush elios suit
one 5 mil superstretch/blackshadow elios suit
one 6 mil black shadow smooth out elios suit (green pelagos camo)
one Omer 3mil ocean camo
D3
CRKT Hammon ABC knife (nice - awesome all-round dive knife)
Omer Mini laser arm knife (also nice)
Omer Shogun (came with a gun - nice for BW hunting esp)
Canon s80 with housing and wide-angle (Prints of any of my pics are for sale - by the way :) )
Omer cobra 90cm
Riffe MT0

Some things are for sale - experiments or replaced.

OMG! That list is freakin obscene - I'm so ashamed...

Wonderful dive spots that I pretty much own most of the year just five minutes from my house. So - no violins in the background when you think of me and freediving :)

I think I spend a large percentage of my total income on freediving, This year I guess something just under 40%. For comparison my rent is 28%. I'm very happy to have a cheap rent.

I did some big investments, like my new E400,- tailormade monofin.

Love, Courage and water!
