Freedivers in Fort Lauderdale

Looking to inmerse myself into freediving,being a scuba diver for years,and have tried freediving a few times,totally love it,dying to learn more.If anybody has suggestions please help.I'm a strong swimmer and have a small 17 foot center console boat,I'm also very careful and a good listener. Thanks in advance for any input.

welcome to DB Miguel. Scuba & Free are 2 different animals altogether, I am sure you have noticed, the best thing to do is to take it easy, try to dive with a group of spearo's about your level as well as a few more experienced guys, always buddy up, and AGAIN take it slow, you'll be hitting 50' fore' you know it!

Hey! Im a college student at FAU up in Boca Raton. Ive been into freediving for a few years now off and on but have never been able to push my limits as far as depth goes cuz i dont have a boat or any other way to get deep. Though Ive never taken a class (still savin up for that one) I know a good bit about freediving from different people, books, and forums such as this and I'd love to share what I know!

Mostly lookin for partners to freedive with in the SFL area. I have one buddy here at FAU but if ur willing to hold one or two stowaways on ur boat next time you head out I'd be eternally greatfull! If not, then come hit up some shore dives with us sometime!
 
hi guys.

there is a small but growing group of us who dive almost every sunday somewhere near the ft lauderdale area. we are a beach launch, swim and kayak, group, but we have a lot of fun and usually find some decent eats.

if you have any desire to join us, you are more than welcome

we seldom get very deep (usually move between the 2nd and 3rd reefs) but it is a great place to learn the basics and have a lot of fun getting better.

we're usually in about 30-40fsw
 
That sounds like fun! We dove the Lauderdale area about a month ago and Ive been wanting to get back over there! Any time and place in particular?
 
tha place changes from week to week, but it is almost every sunday...we have a thread about it over on spearboard that we usually use as our bulletin board...check that out but I will try to keep you updated as far as this weeks plans
 
Please guys don't forget me, I want to join in two,can't wait 2 start freediving and meeting people who love the sport.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread since this one seems to fit my question.

I'll be in the fort lauderdale area from march 1-11 (a portion of that time will be on a cruise) I was wondering what the diving is like down there at this time of year.

I"ll be coming down from Toronto where diving is limited. If anyone knows a few good spots worth checking out i'd love to hear from you. I'll be coming down with my mask/snorkel. Will a wetsuit be needed at this time of year?
 
diveboy- Early march is looking like good weather for diving, as far as the need for a wetsuit, it depends, I wear one still, but i have been seeing mor eand more folks at the beach without them. coming from up north you might be a bit hardier to the cold than a floridian like myself.

as for spots off of the dania pier is an easy to access one and it is relatively close to shore. the reefs are tiered and the first and second ones can easily be reached swimming.
 
What kind of species are you guys getting off Ft lauderdale on those reefs? any decent hogs or grouper? I've been thinking about heading down there and checking out the reefs off the beach. My buddies and I do pretty good with the lobster up here around sebastian inlet.
 
I picked off a smaller lane snapper (bout 12 inches) and everyonce in a while I'll see some good sized hogs off on shore dives but the big ones normally are kinda shy, especially for hogs, but then again thats probably how they got so big! I hunt with a pole spear but if youve got a good gun you shouldnt have too much trouble getting them in range.

The good shore spots tend to get a bit overhunted but theres fish out there! Just takes a little moer time in the water to find em.
