Personally I did not use Twitter a lot till now, but find its main advantage in the possibility of updating the messages by a simple SMS from a mobile phone. This makes it a great tool for example for publishing competition results, training alerts, or similar flash news.
Just now, I added another Twitter related feature to APNEA.cz. Not only it displays the last twitter messages on your profile page, which may allow your friends following your news, even if they do not use Twitter themselves. I now added Twitter support to APNEA.cz teams too.
In fact people are not really aware of the team feature at APNEA.cz - regular members can found a "team", and others can then join it. They have then automatically their own website with the URL in form of
APNEA.cz - Freediving and Apnea Resources with own blog, private and public forum, member map, photo & video gallery, calendar and training planner (still in works), and more.
Now, in the team settings accessible to the team founder at
APNEA.cz - Teams, the team founder or admin can assign a twitter handle. Once assigned, Twitter messages for that account will appear on the home page of the team website. You can have a look on the website of the team Cyrnéa (which is currently the only really functional team):
Cyrnéa - L'apnée à Lyon (yes, it has own domain and slightly modified layout, but it is still based on the same team feature of APNEA.cz). The messages are in the right column, below the user photos.
There are also some other teams, for example
Sharkbait @ APNEA.cz,
aGua @ APNEA.cz, or
Pejin @ APNEA.cz, but there are practically unused - they have only a single member (the founder) each, and no content in the blog, forum, gallery, or twitter.
The big advantage of this Twitter feature for APNEA.cz teams is that unlike the classical Twitter messaging, it supports updates from multiple phones (and other sources of course too). Unlike at the Twitter web, on the APNEA.cz team home page, they are displayed not only messages of the owner of the Twitter account, but also messages sent to it by anyone else. It means all members can send some flash updates from their phones (or from the PC's too) to the main page. All they need to do is prefixing their Twitter message with @teamAlias and it will appear on the home page at the next reload.
I plan sending updates about the competition in Prague next week in this way - instead of calling or sending SMS to all who are interested, I'll simply type a short SMS to the twitter number, and the flash update will be published for all.
