Hello all,

This is my first post here and I am delighted to be a member.

I am currently finalising a filmscript, and in the story the main characters are performing a 50m freedive after a 30min 10-20m SCUBA dive.
Now, I could go totally 'hollywood' on this and let them perform it with no thought, but I want the segment to be grounded (someway) in reality.
[I dont want any divers in the auidence to groan outloud :)]

Would there be any safety concerns about this? there would be about 10 minutes surface time between the dives.
The characters would be making the free dive to a 'moon pool', where they would stay for about 20 minutes.

What would the divers be experiencing, if anything?

I had a feeling it was quite dangerous. Thank you for the link IS!
(this will add another level of tension)

Hi,

there will be huge difference in nitrogen load after 30 min 10 m SCUBA dive and 30 min 20 m SCUBA dive. Personally I wouldn't worry about freediving after first profile but not after second where NDL is about 40 min. Do not forget about work load, water temperature, gas mixture etc.. Nitrox can increase you safety by the way.. And stay hydrated=)
Good luck!

There are SERIOUS considerations. I am living proof. I got quite a serious bend that left me injured for 2 years from freediving 16 hours after a scuba dive

Do not freedive after scuba until your computer is cleared. If you don't have a computer, wait at least 24 hours.

Wonderful.
Thank you for the replies guys.
I intend to put my characters in danger anyways, and its good to hear that they are!

a bounce dive is a bounce dive, be it free or on scuba.

I'd pass on any freediving post scuba, although i do enjoy snorkling about between dives.

Just so you know, after my bend I got PADI to approve some advice on this - it was to treat freediving after scuba like flying after scuba - with a freedive classed as anything below 6m - so some shallow snorkelling would be ok

All this is very unresearched though so do take care.

Sam

I agree with the above. Also being a bends victim I am not willing to dive the chamber again.
Nitrogen forms in the system in the slow and fast tissues in the body while scuba diving.A small bubble stuck in a fast releasing tissue would be no problem at all after a scuba dive.Freedive to 50meters and you compresss that bubble and release it back into the blood stream. On the way up it expands and say..gets stuck in your spine.Big problem then.:crutch
