Freediving and personality types

Hi Jorg,

I suspect that there are a lot of ISTP's and ESTP's as these are the predominant adventure seekers / risk takers. At least others see them as risk takers, when in reality they are very calculated risks, thus removing most of the risk that the general public sees.

I am not a natural athlete. When in grade school I was usually one of the last to be picked for team sports. Now 40 years later, I am probably in better shape then most of the "jocks" I went to school with. I know my limits and what is needed to do what I like.

INFJ for me. I've taken the Meyers-Briggs a couple years ago and I was an ISFJ.

I am not a fan of personality tests. They have their uses but they are trying to present a very simplified discription of what is an extremely complex concept.

I am sure that all apneists would share certain characteristics but there are also many characteristics that would have no bearing whatsoever. If we can get a big enough sample here it would be interesting to see if any trends show up.

I keep getting INFP when ever I make these tests so I guess it must be along the right lines. So the quiet, sissy, nerdy type - who would've guessed :)

So we have -

INFP - Idealist
ISTP - Mechanic
ENFJ - Giver
INFJ - Protector
INTJ - Scientist

So can we say INFJ is this ideal based on these results?

Seems it takes all sorts.

(The latter part means 'plus six additional characters' - otherwise it wouldn't let me post.)

Hmm, strange, I am getting LAZY all the time, because each time I start with the test, I get bored after three questions and abandon it.

Trux we know your not lazy.

Most ISTP/Craftsmen like me, will read forums for information but we seldom post. When we do it is short and to the point.

This is interesting, so, I thought I would shyly express the result, sensing that people would understand, while strongly feeling I was contributing for the greater good while kind of feeling ok that things would work out pretty good. ;-)

ISFP

slightly expressed introvert
slightly expressed sensing personality
very expressed feeling personality
moderately expressed perceiving personality

INTJ

and I agree with shoutatthesky that these tests have a limited application.

Hi,

ENFJ here, I need to add that since I joined this forum in 2006 I've met personally over 40 freedivers :)friday!). I even became friends with some but let me tell You my observation, they are so various, so many kinds of people there underwater. Quiet and loud, rich and poor, smart and smarter...

I was wondering myself what kind of people are "water people" but it seems like any character, and personality can love water. Maybe it's that simple

I say that too, it's just that when I read it over and over I realize that description is 99% correct and sometimes is 100% like here, a guy who likes being alone but...

"ENFJ's are so externally focused that it's especially important for them to spend time alone. This can be difficult for some ENFJs, because they have the tendency to be hard on themselves and turn to dark thoughts when alone. Consequently, ENFJs might avoid being alone, and fill their lives with activities involving other people."

Or here:

"The ENFJ may feel quite lonely even when surrounded by people. This feeling of aloneness may be exacerbated by the tendency to not reveal their true selves."

Yeah, so that's somewhat cool and interesting but a little scary too

And then I read description for INFJ and looks like a good match for Josh demasoni above (as far as You can get to know a guy after a week of diving)

I personally get a little creeped out when I ready my description. How do they know me so well.....

The test can be skewed by things we are forced into which can affect how we answer things. I would imagine that this test would not be effective for some cultures as well.

I have a friend in marketing and sales and he uses tests like this to help in filling his sales force. He told me of one that passed the personal interview and he thought he was a fit for the job. Then when he got his evaluation back he had to talk to him again because the test gave a totally different impression of the guy. As it turned out the guy just needed a job and put on a very convincing act.
