Freediving as an industry

I'm not sure if "industry" is a term I should use for freediving but being in the U.S. have noticed the lack of readily available training. It appears that here there are few options for training. Even then it appears that instructors have to be flown in.

Is there anyone here qualified to say what the trend in freediving is as a sport? Do you expect it to grow here and/or around the world? Will it be like soccer or rugby? Popular everwhere but in the U.S.?

I just want to know what I'm getting into. Formal training and buddies are hard to find. Even in Florida.

The trend in the US is definately upward, but it is starting from a very very low base almost everywhere, so don't expect to see many participants or specialized training in NW Florida. There is a lot of good in that.

There are some DB members in your area, look for the "Florida Divers" thread.

As for my opinion.... I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned soccer and rugby. There are certain sports, activities, etc. for which Americans have no tastebuds. I don't know why this is. Perhaps it isn't linear enough. Maybe it is too abstract. I think Westerners are sometimes too concerned with numbers and measurments i.e. how deep can you go? how much can you bench press etc. In my opinion there is life beyond numbers.

Holy crap. I'm only a week older than you and....yes, Jax.=YUK! I moved from blue clear water in Ft. Lauderdale and the little bit of freediving mecca that we have here a year ago.
