Me and some buddies thought of going on a divingtrip next week, and we have thoughts of both freediving and scubadiving. We are no advanced freedivers, maximum depths around 40 feet.

So to the question... Is it dangerous to Freedive before an Scubadive?

Its not dangerous but you must make sure that your surface times when freediving are nice and long ( 5-8 min ) and that you give your self 12 hours between sports. I find that I feel very strange breathing underwater now and the noise is something else! Enjoy.

I on the other hand I think that if the max depth is 40 feet you can freedive quite freely as much as you want and in the same pattern as if you weren't about to scuba afterwards and can scuba with no interval before. As long as it's BEFORE the scuba and that you're not doing 4min+ bottom times. Keeping the surface time twice the dive time should be conservative enough for that depth.
Wait 24 hours after scuba and never freedive if you have a nitrogen debth.
I'de take some antioxidant supplements though, as the free radicals you might generate while freediving might become more harmful when doing scuba.

There are no real freediving nitrogen tables, so Almostafish might be right and I might be dead wrong. I'm just telling you what I would do.

Yeah there are no set rules that I know of but just be aware of the risks.

stay above 40ft and freedive to your hearts content, long serface intervals, nothing overly strenous, all good. I do it all the time. freediveing AFTER scuba is a no-no though.... unless you limit yourself to 15ft and less.....

my opinion is that the worst thing is bad psychology , so if freedive before diving helps to get a better psychology then it looks more like helping scuba dive
