Freediving crater lake oregon

Iam in Australia and do some freediving in a crater lake we have here ours is only 65m deep and green water best vis around 7m. I did some google searching today about crater lakes just out of interest and came across this lake in america.

I simply cannot believe how amazing this place looks, 594m deep water is cobalt blue looks like the deep ocean and beautiful lake with no waves no current or anything, apparently visibility has been measured at up to 41m!!!!!!! Just wondering if anyone in the US is doing any freediving there? Got any stories to tell about it etc looks like the ultimate freedive location. I was in florida in january so wishing I had have gone and checked this place out. Have to come back one day to see this lake

The Elevation of 1883m could cause some challenges in terms of oxygen beeing the restricting factor of going deep - and apparently motorvehicles are forbidden in the reservate so everybody have to carry everything... and in 1883m that could be a challenge in it self... Still very deep dives could be done here. And it seems an awesome place indeed!

I wouldn't mind having a cabin there, hosting freediving courses and doing some fishing, farming, hunting and painting for a living. With that kind of training and a few buddies I'm sure I could hit some nice depths in a year or two. And At sea-level I'll have extra O2 to calm my nerves for any championship.

Only drawback would be the temperature, I think it's will be rather chilly. 7mm all season...

yer i agree kars training in that lake at that elevation would give you a good boost diving back down at sea level, the cold may be a problem though. No one from america on here freedived it or responded? Man i would kill to have a place that awsome in our backyard here, heck im keen to come back over there just to see this place
The lake we dive in is at 750m ASL which to me doesnt impact my diving at all compared to sea level, i actually feel it is easier diving deeper here due to freshwater. 1883m is quite a bit higher but i think good dives would still happen here.

That place has been on my list for years, but I've never heard of any freediver trying it. Nothing on DB that I could find. Hope somebody chimes in.

I don't know if they've hit crater lake yet, but the guys in Oregon have a Palooza event every summer and hit some other high altitude lakes with incredible viz. Here's a thread on one of them and I know that they've had more:

Seems I might be late to the party here, but I went to Crater Lake a month ago. I hiked down with my wetsuit and fins and everything else. Oh man was it worth it!!! It was like swimming in air. I honestly cannot describe the clarity, it must be seen for yourself. Easily 100'+ vis. I was in 3/2 fullsuit, 1mm socks with my fins, no hood, no gloves and was fine until about 45-50' there is a pretty good thermocline there. Beyond that it was darn chilly. Probably one of my favorite dives of all time I had there. I swam away from shore until I couldn't see the wall (it drops off very steeply. All the same, I had to swim a good ways before I couldn't see it). I dove down and found my point of neutral buoyancy and just hovered there, in blue empty space. Blue above, blue below, and all around, the purest shade of blue I've ever seen. It felt like I could have been inside a small blue sphere where the edge was just out of reach, or thousands of feet away. No visual point of reference, and completely silent and still. I don't know how long I stayed down, but it didn't seem time had much hold on that place anyway. If anyone get the chance, I highly recommend diving in Crater Lake.

Awesome dive spot! The altitude is a challenge if your coming from sea level when I was living up in the mountains I freedove it with no problem but it does take a while to get used to the lack of oxygen be sure to practice safe freediving. SWB could come much faster with less exertion than at sealevel.
