Hi all,

I want to start logging my dives to keep an historical track of the places I've been and the details of each dive. Things like date, location, deepest dive, length of dive, water temperature, fish seen, visibility and even photos or videos you might have taken etc. At the moment I just put this into a spreadsheet, but this is cumbersome and not a very exciting way to look back over dives in years to come.

My day job is developing mobile apps, so I thought having this sort of thing on my phone or tablet as an app could be really handy. I've started building it, but at the moment I'm only taking into account what I want to see. So I'm reaching out to the wider freediving/spearo community to see if this sort of divelog app would be handy to you? And if so, what would you want to see in it for it to be useful to you?

I don't see this as a training app... more to log your recreational/fun dives.

Any suggestions/comments would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Pete

Hi Peter...sounds great, I used to keep a spearfishing log on a spreadsheet as well, but like you I found it a bit cumbersome and not very attractive to look at, it also took a bit of effort to collate the information from different websites. I used to when possible record information such as:

Date - Day, Month, Year

Location - Gps Co-Ordinates (sourced from smartphone), areas dived eg. west of pier, Kelp beds on east side of reef etc. Entry/Exit points (sourced from observation, photos or google maps)

Tide Info - High/Low Tide times and Height, Moon Age (sourced from Local Tide Tables), Flow direction and speed, Wave height, swell, chop etc., (sourced from Windguru and observation)

Weather - Air temp (sourced from thermometer in my car), Wind speed and direction, weather conditions eg Overcast, Sunny, Changeable, Clear etc. (sourced from Windguru and observation)

Solunar Prediction - Useful to see if it is accurate, location can set by Gps Co-Ords (sourced from solunarforecast.com)

Dive Details
- Entry to Water Time, Exit from Water Time, Sea Temp, Visibility, Deepest Dive, Longest Breath Hold, Equipment used eg. Wetsuit, Speargun, Gopro, Dive Float, Dive watch etc. Comment Box for eg. Mask starting to leak, trigger mech needs attention, strong NE current on incoming tide, hazards etc. (sourced from dive watch and observation)

Catch - Species caught, weight, pictures link, video link, Comment box for eg. exact area where caught, seen but not taken, other predators like seals nearby etc. (sourced from camera, weighing scales and observation. I use cloud services like Picasa, Flickr, Dropbox which have auto upload from camera phone)

If an online feed (Facebook, Twitter other social media site) was added, some sharing might be a nice feature but as most spearos like to keep their best spots/finds secret you would need to be able to select what to share and what to hide. It could be a useful feature though for logging and sharing hazards in a general/particular area such as rip currents, boat traffic lanes, diving hazards eg. fishing nets, long lines, predators.

I will add Dive Times in min and secs 4 each dive.
This apps must be done not only for spearo and advanced freedivier, but mostly for spearo and recreational freediver. The more people who will want this - the better.

An import feature from the various dive watches and logs could be supported I guess. Probably not that many for freediving/spearing...Aeris, Suunto, Oceanic, Omer, Sporasub etc.

Hi it is great idea. I use the Android and PC and I couldn't find anything for freedive logging. But why not also add the training records? For open water it can be same (fun dives and training dives) so there could be just some more columns for the pool disciplines (static, dynamic, dne,...) I am not competitive freediver but once we have a training it usually consist of morning pool and afternoon open water so for me it would be nice to be possible to log all these daily activities in one record. Thanks for considering it
