First I am looking for a good instructional video can anyone recommend one?

Second I have been freediving for about a year and am frustrated with my progress. My static hold time pb is 2 minutes but that was a fluke and I have not been able to recreate it. Static dive I am only able to stay submerged for 30 seconds but that is moving constantly.

Am I being impatient and just need to keep practicing or am I progressing slower than average and need to rethink my approach.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If you can afford it you might benefit from a course, I think there is a intructional video around don't know anyone whose used it, do a search for freediving on amazon.com in video, and you will find it-can't say how useful it is. youtube is a great source for footage, as for your percieved lack of progress it's hard to say with information you gave----how are you training?--how often? read through the beginner and training threads

Thanks Monkey, I have not been training very often due to cold weather but I plan on getting back into it soon with spring approaching. I was training about once a week. I intend to take a class this year but I want to be as accomplished as possible when I take it. Do you really learn that much from one freediving class?

I guess my question is should I take the class ASAP and does what you learn really make that much of difference or is it mainly time in the water and the class just helps refine your technique.

Training does not have to be in the water, You can do lots of things on dry land. Have You read - and worked - through the "How to start freediving" thread?

obviously once a week isn't much, I try to include training into everyday life, e.g. When at the office, I apnea-walk to the loo and to colleagues offices and use micro breaks to rest my eyes (screen worker) for a casual breath hold every now and then.

And: Most certainly You will benefit from a course. It will give You the tools to continue Your training afterwards, and even more it's great to get a motivation boost (and meet people as well).

Taking a freediving course will improve your ability tremendously. I speak from example. Last June, my max static was 2min10sec. Max depth 58ft. During the course I did a 5min12sec static and now my depths frequently exceed twice my old personal best. All from learning proper technique, not from training. I used to practice, but I was not practicing good technique and never improved. Trust me, 2min statics will be a piece of cake.

I totally agree.

I've been a freediver for just 6 months now.
I booked my first course, last year and trained by swimming every night in the pool for three months prior to the big weekend. Before the course I could manage a static of just over 2 min, and Dynamic no fins of 45m.

Last day of the course after being shown proper technique I managed a static of 4mins 20sec and a deepest dive of 20m.

I still train most nights and every weekend that the weather is good I get into the sea. I have already had a couple of different boatmen doing the "worried Fox-Terrier" at the water's edge wondering if I am ever going to surface.

I am now quite comfortable diving in 15 - 20 metres of depth and have managed to get plenty of Schallops on my lungs when all my mates need SCUBA gear to achieve the same.

So long story short do a course. With proper instruction and technique your abilities will surprise even yourself!!!

PS I'm now a course junkie and have just paid my deposit for an advanced/safety diver course next month and am in training again.

40Metres here I come!!!!!!!!!!
