Hi!

I am a norwegian freediver looking to spend a year (August 2009 to July 2010) in the US working on a PhD degree. But I am also a dedicated freediver (mostly constant weight in the 50-70 m depths). I will be grateful for any information about the possibilities for deep diving and buddies in the San Francisco area. But it would also be interesting to know about the best places to go for deep diving in the US generally (I know of course about FIT and Miami).

Hope to hear from you guys 'over there'

Cheers,
Erlend

Hi Aber,

Well, sorry to see you haven't had any replies. I have only moderate experience diving around SF, but here's what I know:

It seems like lots of divers end up diving around Monterey. SCUBA there is certainly _very_ popular, and I know lots of people spear in that area too. It's about 2hr drive south from SF. I'm sure there must be _some_ diving between San Francisco and Monterey, but I haven't heard anything about it. Maybe someone else on this forum can speak up. My deepest dives there have been in the 20m range, diving in kelp. Not sure where would be a good place for convenient access to deeper water....

Abalone diving is common on the coast north of SF. I'm not sure if people also spear in this area. I've never been diving up there, so that's really about all I know.

In terms of _just_ freediving (no spearing, abalone), I've not heard much. I'm actually looking for those sorts of divers myself. I'm sure they're around

In terms of the US in general, I've done most of my diving around Hawaii, on the Big Island in particular. There's really wonderful diving there, as well as an active freediving community. I ran into a number of freedivers in the Kailua-Kona area when diving on vacation there. There's great shorediving all along the western side of the island, but the depths you're talking about are beyond my knowledge and experience. I'm sure it gets that deep fairly close to shore in many places, but not sure where's most convenient to access those depths.

I don't dive anywhere near the depths you do, but I'd be happy to go diving with you when you get to the Bay Area. Feel free to drop me a private email.

Thank you for replying to my thread, Hawkeye. The plans have been changed and we are going to Boston instead. This is final, so I hope to find some divingbuddies there.

Hey guys, I'm sorry i missed this thread. I run a spearfishing club out of Monterey, and we dive everywhere from down in Baja all the way up to over the border in Oregon. If you guys would like to know more about diving in the area, or are ever looking for someone to jump in with down this way, drop me a line!
