Hi all, I am new to the world of freediving and spearfishing; technically, i suppose I have engaged in freediving (a breath and an inch), but nothing beyond 5 meters. On that note, I have a few questions:

1) First of all, does anyone know where I can get lessons in freediving. I'm from Connecticut in the U.S., and it seems that the community here is relatively small? Please, please correct me if I am wrong. I know of one club (tri-state skindivers spearfishing club I believe they are called), but not many instructors or places to get lessons on the basics.

2) What kind of gear should I buy to start out with?

I've seen gear packages from places like dixiedivers.com, spearfishing.com.au, most of which come with a mask, snorkel and a set of fins. Spearfishing.com.au has a couple ProBlue sets, dixiedivers has a Cressi set and an Omer set. All of these sets seem to range from $180 to $250. On the other hand, I've heard great things about the Cressi 3000 LD I think it was, and various other fins. Is it worth buying a set? Or is it better to put your own together, piece by piece? Any advice on how to put together a decent starter set that would last for a couple years would be much appreciated.

3) Spearfishing...so yes, I've decided that I am a purist and would opt for a polespear. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rundown on the pros/cons of fiberglass vs. aluminum as well as an ideal length to start off with. I've been looking at JBL and AB Biller travel polespears, as well as a few others on sites that have been suggested here on the boards...hanapaafishing.com had some interesting ones, but I am really looking for one that has the 6mm adapter to allow use of both paralyzer and flopper tips. Again, any advice would be appreciated.

I think that about covers it for now. Thanks, and be safe.
