Below is a video link to a story of two brothers in Florida that nearly drown on the same freedive. It's just another example of how imperative it is to have a properly trained dive-buddy and to get the safety message across to new freedivers. I believe the incident occurred in 2007.

Apparently the number of freediving fatalities in just the United States alone are higher this year than they were last year at this time. I realize this immediately raises a number of questions.

On that note, there are at least two organizations that track these freediving incidents (injuries, fatalities or close calls) for educational and awareness purposes. If you have a story to share, submit it to the Divers Alert Network and DiveWise.org. The links are listed below.

DiveWise's 'Share your Story' - http://www.divewise.org/submit_story.html
