What are your rules for choosing a freediving team to send to the world freediving team championships? What rules do you use for alternates replacing team members?

We choose the top 4 competitors from our competitions for each of the teams (both men and women). If we still don't have enough then we allow others in until the teams are full. At the world team competition site we choose our 3 competitors as the 3 best on the last day to select the team, for both the men and women. The 4 fourth best competitors on this day then become the alternates.

So the 4 team members are all required to do a max dive in each discipline right before the comp? Wow!

Edit - I might have misread that, is it just a judgement call by the selectors that determines who is 'best' rather than actual performances? Last-minute selection of any kind was something NZ avoided because nobody would be willing to spend all that money and commit all that time without the assurance they would be competing. It could also lead to team members competing with one another in an attempt to get into the starting 3, which could seriously hurt their performance in the actual comp. I mean, imagine having to do a 220m DYN, a 90m CWT and an 8:00 STA in the last week just to get into the starting lineup!!

I believe it is up to the AIDA national to decide.

But what we have done in the past is look at competition or record attempt results from the previous and current season and rank the willing candidates based on that.

Set a deadline for "making display of performance" that is some 6 months before the competition so the team would be selected some time before and have a change to train as a team too.

For example if selecting athletes for 2008 it would be something like:
-Results from 2007 are accepted
-Results from 2008:
-Deadline in march 22 (National Pool champs)
-Team selection and announcement after that
-Anyone can set up a "display of performance" at their own time and cost - they need 2 AIDA judges present and to notify the AIDA national 2 weeks in advance (ie if there is no suitable competition to prove that you are in shape, this is a backdoor to do that)

However usually we have more trouble filling the spots so for example this year the reality was not quite this strict
