Does anyone know what the rules are regarding spearing in France? Seasons, species, bag limits, licences etc.

no need for a licence anymore, they did away with that at the start of the year. Only bag limits are 6 for spider crabs per diver this time of year. scallop season is over but that is 30 and there are strict times at which you may catch them within a 2 hour period -- re-opens in november.

Abalone is strictly forbidden as are clams etc. No limits on fish I'm aware of apart from their size. let me dig out my info page and I'll edit this and post em up for you but Im sure you won't have any problems unless you're shooting shrimp sized bass. Only other thing to avoid is spearing any crustaceans such as lobster, certain areas are forbidden territory for spearos -- no diving from harbours and within certain wildlife reserves such as the "golfe du morbihan" here in Brittany. You need to get all that information locally.

Any other questions fire away. Been living and diving here for over five years now.

My family holiday this year will be near St Gilles Croix de Vie in Vendee. Will it be worth taking my gun?

I'm not familiar with the area with regards diving but it's always worth taking your gun with you to unfamiliar territory.

The restrictions look quite reasonable. I took 3 spiders once (as the reef was packed with them and I could be selective) for a meal. I wouldn't want to take more than that. 6 seems a reasonable limit for those with larger families/friends.
