This should be in hunting, but I was wondering, what is the best way to dispach fish in fresh water

Everything I have read on dispatching a fish mentions either a knife blade through the top of the head, an Ikijimi spike through the top of the head, or cutting up under the gills hitting the artery that is located there. You can do a search for each of these, I don't remember which thread covered the subject right now (overload from reading tons of threads). There is a DIY thread on making your own Ikijimi spike as well. I will be testing all of these ways out this summer, mainly on Carp, Mackinaw trout, and kokanee salmon.

If you feel you might get a better response see if you can get this thread moved to the hunting forum. Good luck.

the same way you would in saltwater :D

(moving this to hunting)

Ohh my God... "How to kill da' damn fish?"

Well... I cut the "bone" just under the gils (the one which connects the lover part head and the lower part of its body), but i do it quick. After this they are nothing but dead.

When I catch I a spike or something (Volga- rod fishing), we just bang on the head with a stone or tool. I want to try, what happens if you hit their lip, for some fish its a very sensible spot, what makes them "chilled" for a while....

For me the best way is the one that gives less pain to the fish: do it fast, don't make them suffer more than necessary.
In freshwater the only particularity is eels, very hard to die: stab in the brain and screw with the kinife, then cut their spine deeply after the head.

Generally I put the knife up into the brain via a gill opening, push and twist...done.
Peace,
Erik Y.
