I might be heading up to montana from Hawaii for school and although i will probably never get the opportunity to go spearing. I am a little curious to what kind of gear is used in freshwater. gun lengths, wetsuits, fins? i don't know how many freshwater guys there are on here but i thought i would ask anyway

5mm wetsuits (or thicker),socks, and gloves. I prefer 3-finger mitts over gloves because they keep my hands much warmer and find I have just as much dexterity as I do with a 5mm glove.

75cm guns seem to be about the best length, but you could go shorter if the vis is really bad. If the vis is a bit better I would still stick with a 75cm gun due to hunting in the weeds.

Since you'll be wear a much thicker suit you might want to get a weight vest in addition to your belt. I used to use a vest all the time for my winter diving, but then switched over to FRC and dropped about 8 pounds off my belt so I decided I didn't need it anymore.

Make sure you get fins that will allow you to squeeze 5mm socks in them. I have been happiest with the C4 Mustangs when it comes to wearing thicker socks without too much slop when I kick.
