ok, i have spent a few days designing a basic website - but do you think i can upload it??? NO

i have done it through Yahoo! Small Business... then accidentally deleted teh index.html rofl so started again, created one using Publisher (as i was told it was easier) so i did, and now have problems publishing the website... it tells me i need to use an FTP site to publish the page.. used the recommended one and it still doesnt work

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP A DILLY BLONDE???

First you need to get the FTP login info to your server from your host (you have probably received it when creating the account)

Well, I am not familiar with MS Publisher and its functions, but this is what the help states:

Note To complete the following steps, you must have sufficient rights on the Web server to save a file. You must also know the Web address (URL) of the server you want to save the file to. If you are working with Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, you must be a member of a site group with the Add Items right. All default site groups except the Reader site group include this right.
  1. In any Microsoft Office program, click File, and then click Save As.
  2. In the Filename field, type in the URL of the server, the path to the file, a name for the file (or keep the current name), and then click Save. You can enter an Internet address (such as www.example.com) or an intranet address (such as http://example). Notes
    • If the Web server you are working with is running Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, instead of folders you'll see a list of document libraries from the site. This makes it much easier to find and work with files in the site.
    • After you have successfully opened a file on the Web server, a shortcut to the Web server is created in your My Network Places folder. You can then use this shortcut to more conveniently open files on the Web server.
  3. Double-click the folder where you would like to save the file, and then click Save.
You can also use FTP addresses in this way, instead of HTTP - for example ftp://yourserver.com

Or, on another place, the Publisher help states about FTP this:

Create a shortcut for FTP
Before you can add an FTP (FTP: A communication protocol that makes it possible for a user to transfer files between remote locations on a network. This protocol also allows users to use FTP commands, such as listing files and folders, to work with files on a remote location.) site to the list in FTP Locations, you must have access to the Internet or to an intranet.
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Look in box, click the arrow, and then click FTP Locations.
  3. Double-click Add/Modify FTP Locations.
  4. In the Name of FTP site box, type the FTP site name; for example, type: ftp.samples.microsoft.com.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • If you want to log on to an FTP site that allows anonymous log on, under Log on as, click Anonymous.
    • If you want to log on to an FTP site that you have user privileges for, under Log on as, click User, and then type your password in the Password box.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Click OK.
You can find more details in the Help yourself, if you type FTP into the search box.

Otherwise, you can use one of many FTP programs that are available free on the web - like the CuteFTP, WS_FTP, and many others. And of course, you could also use the command line FTP commands in a DOS window, but that would be little bit cumbersome for an unexperienced PC user. Also many HTML design programs like Dreamweaver, Homesite, MS Front PAge, etc, have FTP publishing tools built-in.

Let me know if you need some more help. In the very worst case, you could email me the files and I can upload them for you, but it would be certainly better if you learn it doing alone.

thank you both! i actually got it up (said the actress to the bishop) but the images are marked with a red x... :(
will keep trying and will read the tutorial - thanks Prof! :D
btw i tried smart ftp, did all the settings etc but couldnt actually see where to load it or see it... :duh
will have a read... right now.. a G&T :D

Red X have two common causes.
In most cases the paths in your html don't match the path you've uploaded the images
Example:
<img src="/my documents/homepage/image.jpg" />
instead of
<img src="image.jpg" /> (server root)

Another problem is spelling.
Paths and filenames on servers (other than windows) are case sensitive!
<img src="image.JPG" /> is not the same as <img src="image.jpg" />and thus the image will not be displayed.

Hope this was helpful.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the Caps issue when I replied... Good catch...

Wo in Deutschland bist Du?

Bret

Hi Sara,
Yeah, except for the work part SA is great so far... so is the red wine, the steaks, lamb chops etc. Even the weather is exceptionally god today and it seems that spring has finally arrived. I'm even optimistic to go diving / spearfishing this weekend. I might need an extra weight, though! I guess I gained a few kilos since I arrived ;)

If you have any website related question, then don't hesitate to ask.

@ Brett, I'm from Saxony-Anhalt. Köthen to be precise. Thats about 30 km north of Halle. But for the moment and the next months I work in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

After coding several hundred thousand lines of php and html I know the common mistakes :)
Best pratice is to solely use lower case letters.

Cheers!

Sascha
