GIANT SQUID photographed alive!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Having spoken at length with someone who has had a "mere" Humbolt squid grab him (while wearing stainless steel chain mail) and make a serious try at eating him, I cannot help but be veerrryyyy grateful that the colossal squids stay down there and leave up here to less ferocious types, like the GWS and orca!

Imagine the Spray of Ink when you try to land that bugger on the boat,
But it would be worth it, masses of Salt and Pepper Squid or pan fried squid in garlic yummmmm

There isnt actually a video, they just took a series of stills at 30 second intervals over a half hour period, shame a video would have been spectacular :)

apparently they taste of ammonia, but thats damn impressive is there any high resoloution pics?

Hey Drunky
Keeping it on the down low ehh? Been praticing your skills? That is one big A$$ squid. Talk about your calamari for a thosand folks!!!

I saw something in the Sea of Cortez about 10years ago that was pretty amazing. While staying on a live aboard that was anchored in a small inlet, we were kicking back on board watching the hundreds of fish that were swarming because they were attracted to the lights. We were staying on the Solmar 5. Nice ship, they really light it up at night and the surrounding waters for at least a 50 foot circumference.

While we were standing at the rail staring at the water, a school of humbolt squid surfaced instantly and started grabbing every fish in sight. There were so many squid that they covered the surface as far as the lights shone on the water. The water seemed to be glowing a erie white color. Most of the squid appeared to be in the 3 to 4 foot range in size. They grabbed all the fish that had been swimming around the ship in the matter of about one minute.

The Captain started casting a treble hook through the school and snagged one right away, but they kept getting off the hook when he tried to lift them out of the water. I threw a hotdog in the water, which was instantly grabbed. We had fun feeding the squids for about 5 minutes. Obviously the night dive was cancelled. Once the fish were gone they hung around for a few more minutes and then disappeared as a group all at once. Didn't see anymore the rest of the trip.

haha..ya i know i know....havent been keepin on the DL just been doin a lot where i was either sleepin or out..then i came back to school and well the same thing!!

ya i saw a show on the humbolts (national geo). I knew that everyone was all sayin giant squids are never found alive yada yada..then caught this show and though thet had found the mother load of them...till i realized this was a very common large, although apparently not giant, squid. couldnt believe it was so well known!

so did you see any of the fishermen out catchin them, apparently they get the lil glow hooks and just pull'em up one after another all night..

personally though.. i just think pissing a squid off that size is just bad things a comin!

Yeah, the Humbolts are called "giant" squid and the deep sea versions are the "colossal" squid. The "giants" are quite common and easy to catch in the Sea of Cortez. Getting them off the hook or spear without getting a serious chunk taken out of your personal hide, on the other hand, is quite a trick. As far as the "colossal" verion is concerned, anything that hunts back at sperm whales is outside my pale, I can tell you!

Sarge!! you had a humbolt grab you?? frig man, chain mail or not I'd be pretty nervous! Those tentacles look nasty enough, not to mention that beak... I'd rather be in a submarine or a boat... Actually, at home in bed sounds like the best option! I was watchin' that nutburger on the discovery channel that made the Humbolt armor and routinely gets grabbed while filming them... Some people just have adeath wish I guess!! ;)

No, it wasn't me that was grabbed. However, I dove with the chap you watched get attacked . . . at a completely other time, of course. If you think the video is bad, you ought to listen to some of the other things he's done. Bone-chilling? Man! Anyhow, your approach parallels mine! Home in bed sounds like just the place.

I don't know.... Somehow, the thought of being at home in bed with a Humboldt squid... :hmm
