Some of you may have signed up on this petition. The Government have responded thus;

"The Government appreciates the concerns of the signatories to this petition, but gill nets are in fact a very selective method of fishing, governed by strict rules on target species and providing they are appropriately managed, should limit the scope for discards and indiscriminate fishing. Where there are concerns about their misuse however, local authority Sea Fisheries Committees who have responsibility for fisheries management out to 6 miles from the coasts of England and Wales, can introduce appropriate restrictions through byelaws. The petitioners should therefore approach their respective SFCs to take any necessary action."

Selective fishing my arse! Utter bunch of idiots. Waste of space.

Don't worry guys, DEFRA will sort it out by making anglers pay a license. The proceeds of which will magically increase fish stocks around the English and Welsh coastlines. Just wait, you'll see!

Well what did you expect that the powers that be would actually listen to anything that makes any sense at all?
Bunch of tossers the lot of them.:rcard:rcard

Strict rules?? Is anyone going to tell the fish which ones are allowed to swim into them?

There has been rumblings from our local council regarding introducing a sea fishing licence this last week

Gill nets are supposed to be selective in theory. Fish that are too small wriggle through & free. Fish that are too big bounce off. Just right fish get caught by the gills. But how can they differentiate between, say, pilchards & young bass/mullet/cod/pollock/...? So much for minimum landing sizes (->discard). Dogs, divers & fishing lines get caught in them. They are a hazard.
