Hi everyone. So my new pole spear came through. I'm new to this but have read enough to know one should wear gloves when spearing. But the joints between the sections (it's a travel spear) protrude 1mm and are really quite sharp edges. I've got a feeling I'm going to need some quite fortified gloves to withstand constant wear in the same place.

Any of you lovely people have any experience with this and can offer up some glove suggestions?

in short: what gloves for a travel pole spear!?

Why not sand the edges to round them off? No sense in tearing up your hands or gloves because of it.

thanks for the reply. I'm just concerned they're sticking up too much and if i sand them down too much, it's reach through to the fibreglass. Been trying with gardening gloves which are actually working pretty well. I think after my testing, i'll be safe with with some kevlar palmed ones

You should be able to carefully bevel the edges without damage to the fiberglass. Put some thick tape on the surrounding fiberglass and go at it slow with some sort of hand tool, don't use power, and you should be OK.

As for gloves, anything with a leather or Kevlar palm should do well for your dilemma, and be durable against fish spines as well!

Good luck

You cant go wrong with gloves, but dont invest in the expensive ones if you dont have to. Gardening gloves will work fine until they wear through. Better safe than sorry I say because Im still working out fiberglass splinters in my hands from testing a home-made spear two weeks ago. :t

Kevlar gloves dont grip well on smooth surfaces. The rubber dipped gloves are great for polespears, but they don't give much warmth.

This might help too. Here is the grip I put on my new Ray Odor polespear. I wanted to get a solid grip, even with thick gloves and this one does the trick.

I used #36 tarred nylon trot line like this:

The procedure is simple - just make a series of very tight half hitches and work your way up the pole. I used a glove so that I could really crank on the line when tightening the half-hitches and finishing knot. The end result is a durable, raised spiral grip.

The other photo is the extra tie-in 2" from the butt so that I can crush up sea urchins for "burley".

I don't know much about polespears but I get through quite a few pairs of gloves. They are from dive stores and kayak stores. I find the "amara" fabric quite good . Its tough as old boots and flexible with good grip, like a second skin. Kevlar is OK but not as flexible I find.
Here is a pic of the amara stuff and a mix of kevlar/amara
