I understand how pressure increases with depth. What I don't understand is how world record attempts are made using goggles...can someone explain?

Thanks in advance!

The Goggles are just filled with water. Some freedivers use "fluid goggles" which have corrective lenses on them that allow you to (almost) see properly, even with water on your eyes.

Some other divers (myself included) have some isuues with water current on the eyes. We will uses half masks or regular swimming goggles filled with water to get rid of the current. For dives with this water-current problem this facilitates deep equalization and helps reduce contractions (compared to nothing on the face/just nose clips). The other benefit is if you are diving in a location with thermoclines the flooded goggles can reduce the shock of the colder water.

If you are unaware.. the obvious benefit to diving with something other than an air-filled mask is the reduction of air needed to equalize. Compared to the middle-ears, a mask is a massive air-space and removing it in favour of a noseclip, helps a lot with deep equalization.
