Hello everyone, I'm going to the Bahamas in May and I'm very interested in trying to spear some fish. I'm looking at both Hawaiian slings and pole spears and can't figure out which one would be best. I'll be snorkling in fairly shallow water (I know it's not free diving) around the reefs. The pole spear seems to be a simpler design and prevents the fish from coming off or losing shafts in comparison to the Hawaiian sling. I'll most likely buy one but I'd like to try and make one too. I already attempted to make a Hawaiian sling and it turned out failrly well. Could you guys help me to make a decision?

I'm willing to spend a little over 100 dollars for a decent pole spear or Hawaiian sling. I've looked at the Manny pole spear, the folding pole spear and the JBL pole spears. What would you reccomend? Keep in mind that I'll be flying there.

Thanks in advance!

Eric

Missed this thread. Where exactly are you going to be spearing?

A sling is the best weapon for the Bahamas, much more range and don't worry about losing shafts when shooting reef fish. That said, it takes a fair amount of practice and a store bought sling is usually pretty poor. If you have some one to show you the tricks and help build a good sling, go that way. If not, a pole spear might be better, much easier to learn to use, reasonably powerful right out of the store, but far less range.

Sorry, can't offer any advice on pole gun selection, I'm a slinger.

Good luck and have a great time.

Connor
