hey boys!

i was just given a free trip to the Bahamas for 1 1/2 weeks!! a friend owed me a favor and he couldn’t go so i will be staying at the "Atlantis" for almost two weeks and i want to get out in the water! do you have any tips/pointers for hunting this water? or better yet do you know of any hotspots? let me know!

Great score, you will have a fabulous time.

I've never dove New Providence (I'm assuming Atlantis is on Hog (Paradise) Island), so cant' give any specific detail. In general, the reefs in that area have been hurt pretty bad, lots of dead coral, but the structure is still there, the water is clear, its still spectacular and you will love it. Flying over it, the reefs on the west end of New Providence looked like they had lots of vertical relief, should be great freediving. West along the north side of Rose Island are thousands of coral heads, Right in front of Atlantis is quite a lot of reef.

Spearfishing is a very local knowledge kind of thing, especially when the area has been pounded as long as that one has. Find somebody local to go with. It will cost you, but worth it if you want to really get some fish. Hogfish is what you want to go after, snapper and grouper if you are skillful. You might also get a shot at some cero makeral. For the hogs, get directly above them, go straight down and don't move after you get started down. If it goes well, they will freeze until you are close, then lean over to get a better look at you, exposing a good head shot. Move slow, look behind you a lot and have a good way to get the fish out of the water immediately. Sharks can be a hassle.

Have fun.

Since no one mentioned in this tread, be sure NOT to take your speargun to the Bahamas!! From what I hear, only pole spears are allowed but you must get a license with the local official to spearfish using a pole spear.

You can find more information of regulations here:

Fishing Regulations - Abaco Island and the Bahamas

Dive safe!
