hoping for a strengthening exc for pulling my spearguns back.i have bad shoulders so i dont want to just hit the gym and curl a million lbs.hoping for an exc.i can do at home to be able to load my speargun a little easier.Thougts??

Also have you researched the technique, it can make a big difference to the effort required ;)

So the bands are 16mm, are they the bands that came with the guns or have you retrofitted them and if so did you cut them short? With regard strengthening your shoulders, personally my favourite strengthening exercises for shoulders are variations on press ups which is a pushing action and the old faithful, upright rowing, which is were you bend over and lift weights to your chest which is a pulling exercise. However if, as you say your shoulders are bad I would get them checked before starting an exercise programme and don't underestimate the importance of shoulder flexibility, if you train for strength gain make sure you stretch properly after the exercise. I would definitely recommend doing a search for loading technique, its like anything, the correct technique takes a whole load of unnecessary effort out of the loading. Good luck ;)

Loading a speargun is a pulling exercise. Something like rows or pull ups should be similar to the motion. If you have a shoulder injury, working out and loading a speargun may be a problem. If you are healthy enough to do strengthening exercises, they should help. Another (quicker) option is to use a lighter (thinner) band material. For most reef shooting, you may do fine with two bands made from 14 mm latex http://www.makospearguns.com/Primeline-Industries-Black-Latex-Tubing-p/mbr-bk.htm . We can make custom bands of any length on request - or we sell all the supplies for do it yourself..

Here's an instructional video on loading a railgun, which might help as well:

THANK YOU FOR THE INFO.IAM GOING TO TRY using the above video and see if it helps.it IS CERTAINLY NOT HOW I TRY TO DO IT THANKS AGAIN

what is wrong with going to gym? Exercises to build any kind of strength are better done in a gym, in a more controllable environment. Whatver you will try doing at home will be either too heavy or too light, for you will be lacking the choice of level of resistance.

2x 14mm bands is easier than 1x16mm.

Also, the new small ID 14mm rubber is just as strong as the older 16mm formulation and easier to pull back.

Worth considering your gun setup if it really is an issue.

i am still a little new to this.my dive shop is not a spearfishing shop so little help there.where i bought the omer kanalou not much help there other than buy something.are those bands available from divers direct or similar place .and is it fairly obvious on the purchase to get the right stuff. Thanks for the suggestion i had thought about 2 bands but didd not know how good the application might work.

But the fact remains that technique is more important to loading a gun than strength.

Practice makes perfect.

Another aspect that hadn't been brought up, does your gun have shark fins or notches in the shaft, you may be able to order a shaft with a rest tab or notch , so you can preload it on your hip to the rest position , then move it up to your chest where it's easy to get a good grip on both bands and pull out the final few inches with a little more strength, hope this might help, happy hunting .

That isn't necessarily so. I can do everything I need in my garage. But even if you want to actually get a car in your garage or don't even have a garage, you could do bent rows with a barbell or with dumbbells. Those exercises are specific for the upper back muscles involved in cocking a speargun.

But as said by others, technique is important.

Mate, the truth is loading a gun is a process that requires you to produce the power to store energy. The more power you can produce the more you can store. Technique is important but in the end its like doing a chin up. And its true not everyone can do it, but I saw thread where a smart bloke made up a roller gun with a pulley system using a sailing cleat, to reduce stress on his body. Necessity is the mother of invention and we are fortunate to have some smart people around. 6.5 mm spears require a lot less energy than 7 or 8 to propel so this consideration could keep you in the game. My 12 year old son uses an Aimrite 95 cm with 6.5 and I have take to using it for smaller reef fish. With two loose 16mm bands this thing is like a surgical instrument and is about as hard to load as pulling down a roller door. 14 mm bands are something I must try one day. Salvimar use them for a reason and you cant knock their cred.
