Good spots in Santa Cruz/Capitola area?

I've been driving down to Carmel for spearfishing, but wonder if there are any good spots closer to where I live (Redwood City)? I'm a beginner and am mainly after rockfish, greenling and lingcod.

I’m in the same boat. It would be nice to avoid that part of highway 1, but it just seems the water is so much better down there.

I've not heard anything good about Santa Cruz or Capitola at all. Monterey can be decent, depending on what you're after. Get in contact with the Monterey Tritons and they'll have some more info for you.
