As many already know the GoPro HD (High Definition) Hero camera is unique in that it combines the ability to take high quality video with a low price, in a very compact unit which is most suitable for our application, shooting freediving and spearfishing video. This camera was originally conceived for taking point of view wide angle footage in extreme sports, none of which were really taking place underwater. Hence the Gopro has a problem, the curved lens of the waterproof housing doesn't allow the camera to focus underwater and all resulting footage is blurry. Once the problem was identified the solution was simple; the housing must have a flat lens. Do it yourselfers have come up with different ways to modify the housing for it to incorporate a flat lens, but until now there hasn't been a commercially available solution.

Pursuit has acquired a drop in replacement flat lens for the Gopro housing. It's made of Polycarbonate resin, an amorphous thermoplastic material noted for its outstanding impact strength, superior dimensional stability, glass-like transparency, excellent thermal resistance, and low-temperature toughness.

Replacement of the GoPro housing lens is as easy as undoing the screws, taking out the original lens and dropping in the new lens. There's only one position in which the lens can go in so there's no worry of positioning it wrong. There's a rubber seal between the lens and the housing, no sealant or gluing is required. When tightening the screws of the black plastic mounting ring it's recommend to do it in a crisscross pattern to tighten it down evenly.

Housing and lens disassembled, with new lens on top of the camera.

It's recommended to try the housing at depth without the camera having stuffed tissue paper into the housing to clearly indicate a leak if there is any.

Seems like a great solution to mount the camera on the mask frame! Have you tried mounting the GoPro on different kinds of masks? The one in the picture seems to have a very large plastic frame so it would be easy to drill the hole for the tripod connection, but what about masks with smaller frames such as the OMER Alien, or Sporasub Mystic (my personal favourite)?

Great products Dan!!
BTW what are the shipping costs for red shells including GoPro HD to Germany?? I've my birthday in April, heheeh

Thanks, free with the purchase of a Gopro, just pick your seashell :)

I haven't tried the masks you listed but one of our guys installed it on an omer Bandit the same way.

In a couple of weeks GoPro is releasing the LCD BacPac for the HD Hero camera. As soon as it comes out it will be available from Pursuit. In the meanwhile it can be pre-ordered GoPro LCD BacPac - Pursuit Freediving & Spearfishing Gear

hi guys,
anyone tried the above lcd bacpac??
does it work? does it work fine?
and what happens to battery life, when using it?

thanks in advance

The LCD bacpac works fine. Some cameras need a firmware upgrade available free from the Gopro site.

I often get asked if it's difficult to install the flat lens in the Gopro housing. What better way to demonstrate how easy it is than by doing it outdoors, on a breezy day, with a small uneven work surface, and two lenses at once. Adding the risk factor of dropping something in the water for extra tension

Total install time less than 5 minutes. Video was shot with a Gopro in R5 setting, mounted on a head strap.

Gopro underwater blurry fix 2: Glass flat lens

The glass flat lens (patent pending USPTO 29387406) available from Pursuit Flat Glass Lens For GoPro - Pursuit Diving fixes the underwater focus/blurry problem caused by the original Gopro curved lens. With the flat lens the GoPro camera can take crisp high definition undewater video. The flat lens is a drop-in replacement for the original GoPro housing curved lens. It has a depth rating of up to 180ft, the same as the Gopro housing. The lens is made of glass set in an anodized aluminum frame.

To install the flat lens undo the screws of the black plastic bezel with a precision Phillips screwdriver, remove the bezel and set it aside leaving the screws in it. Take out the curved lens, there's a black gasket that goes between the lens and housing that is usually stuck to the lens and will come out with it. Separate the gasket from the lens and place it back in the housing. Put the flat lens on top of the gasket, no sealant or glue is needed. There's only one way in which the lens can be positioned for the bezel to seat back and the screws align with the screw holes, so there's no worry of assembling incorrectly. When tightening the bezel screws do it in a crisscross pattern to tighten it down evenly. Do not over tighten the bezel screws. Over tightening may compress the rubber gasket too much, making it expand into the field of view of the camera.

Housing and lens disassembled, with the glass flat lens on top of the housing.
