Did something stupid on monday and a wave decided to bring me back my surf board. The left side of my rib cage accepted the gesture jubilantly. There was some pain but I kept surfing for a short while after (well, attempting to surf, am still quite at the start).
There isn't any external sign and at the start I thought it is just an intercostal or the latisimus dorsi that is transmitting pain. It hurts ever since, pain is proportional to the breathing volume (full inhale/exhale hurts the most), sneazng and blowing my nose delivers a sharper pain. But it isn't that painful, doesn't make me flinch with every breath or something, just a constant reminder that it is there. I think the pain is coming from a more lateral place to where I got hit though it is hard to tell.

So today when I woke up and noticed I was sleeping on that side I started rethinkng this damaged muscle theory. Will go by the dr's office to see if he is there but it might take a few days till I'll catch him as the weekend is almost here.

For now, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with broken ribs and maybe could tell me of a few signs to help my poor self diagnosis, and what kind of a treatment a broken rib might entail, if there is anything to do anyway.

Worst case I will ask Amphib to send me a rib transplant from a bear. Preferably with the meat surrounding it so it won't get damaged along the way.

Luckly my suit is ok (was surfing with my elios). :)

Michael,

Sorry about the pain. As far as the bear ribs go, it should work like a charm. Phibs has two bear ribs and one moose rib himself. His surgeons originally were going to use camel ribs, but Phibs told them "F#ck That"!

If you have loads of spare ribs marinade in this sauce for up to 8 hours - hmmm :p

Rib Marinade

1 cup soy sauce
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Dissolve sugar in soy sauce, water and vinegar. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Use as a marinade for up to 8 hours.

Ribs are unique in that they are the only bone in the human body that will grow back, even if removed. You'll be o.k. but defintely incomfortable.

Doc sent me for an x-ray shoot to make sure the my suspected injury is only for the ribs and that the rib didn't damage anything. Will know better next week.

I had a freind who caught a nasty cold. He sneezed so hard that his rib came out of the cartalidge. It was pointed right at his liver. Luckily no damage but Yikes!
My Uncle fell on ice once. He drove his rib into his liver. Very long hospital visit.
Good thing you are seeing a doc Michael

best of luck

Friend of mine ruptured his liver when snowboarding and almost died. Only the membrane around the liver prevented him from bleeding out entirely. Today he's just fine.

I was boogie-boarding some years back when the nose of the board dipped down and my lower rib cage area landed on the back of the board. It was unpleasant, to say the least. I went to the dr, who sent me for x-rays. Those didn't show any breakage, but the discomfort was in the false rib area, where you wouldn't be able to see much anyway. To this day it's still tender.

Enough with my stories :). If you have a broken rib, the only thing you can do is just let it heal. They can't splint or cast it. I hope it's nothing too bad, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I have Bear & Moose Ribs,

but it's not my fault if you have strange hair growth or get excited every fall after the transplant :t

i cracked my rib in 2004 slipping in boat. dam it was painful, breathing, sitting and even talking sometimes hurt. get it x-rayed if you arent' sure but there is nothing much you can do.

i went to the Indian Orthopaedic surgeon in Male' (Maldives) crying for some pain killers.

"Please madam, please to be seated."

-tap tap on the ribs- does this hurt?
(OOWWWWW!!!)

"Please madam, dont to be thinking about it. Because pain is directly related to the emotions." :vangry

Wow... I never knew that just because someone was crying and screaming with pain, that they might be hurt in some way... rofl

Well, yeah, severe pain causes bad emotions. Eliminate pain, improve emotions. Simple, what? :head

Update: they took 4 shots, yet to my lay eye it seems like the area where the pain is coming from was never the focus of the photo. Diagnosis is that everything seems normal. I hope that means that in a few more days-week the pain will disapear as the doc says if it isn't bones it is not likely to hurt more than 10-14 days.
The pain definitely decreased during the weekend, but that can have existential reasons as well. :)

That has happened to me sometimes - the doctor tells me that something is caused by stress, and points out that I look very stressed, when it is obvious that if I am in a lot of pain, and urgently need treatment which doesn't look likely to be prescribed, I will be stressed! :head

Waited for 3 hours in an emergency room with a severely broken collarbone one time. Things like that can cause a bit of stress.
