Don't know why it's taken this long for me to find this site but I'm glad I did.
I've been freedive spearfishing for about 25 yrs now, mostly on the Florida west coast. I've never taken any classes and other than keeping myself in good physical shape, I've never done much "specialized" apnea training.

I am often the only freediver in the water as I often catch a ride with hook and line guys or bubble blowers Having said that, I am comfortable spearfishing 85'(laying on the bottom) alone. I've never tested my limits but have recently become intrigued by the thought.

I like to go deep and stay long. Hopefully this site will enlighten me on the subject.

Nice to meet you all, Noah

Hi Noah, welcome to the forums. I'm only fairly new myself but this is a great place to be!

Aloha Noah,

Welcome to the DB. There is nothing more exciting than pushing yourself to new levels, my only advice would be to do it with a good partner! I used to do a lot of diving by myself and experience has taught me that someone watching your back is a must! especially when pushing the limits.

You should have no problem finding other divers in your area here on the DB!

Good luck and dive safe

Thanks guys, hey Blaiz, you happen to know Kevin(Hammerhead guns/wetsuits)? Had the chance to dive with him this last fall and had a blast

Hi again, Noah,

You are a prime candidate for a PFI or FIT course. Personal experience, it will substantially improve your diving and change your attitude about diving, worth every dime. Diving your kind of depth, safety is a real concern. Check out a couple of threads, "lessons learned, a SWB story" by Amphibious and "Lessons learned in the Bahamas. . . " by unirdna. Both are in Freediving Stories and can be found using the "search" function, top right of the page.

A course does seem to be inevitable, as much as I hate to admit it... I was hoping not to overcomplicate something that I enjoy so much for it's simplicity.

"IF" I decide to go to one, which course would you recommend?

Both PFI or FIT are excellent. I did the PFI when both Martin and Kirk were instructing. Martin has since gone on to found FIT. Given what I know of your diving and the character of each course (not a whole lot of either) I'd say PFI was the best fit to you. However, both are very close and FIT has the advantage of more courses in S Florida and better chance to get good weather. Weather to get the open water in is critical to a optimal experience.

Not personally, I dive with a few people who do. Im pretty sure he dives mainly on Oahu and the Big Island. I do most of my diving on Maui and Kauai.

I have heard he is a great diver and a pretty cool guy. If you get the chance, check out Hawaii Skin Diver Magazine, not the most recent one but the one before that, The cover story is the west side bait ball. Hes in that story, and its a great read. Im pretty sure thats in their new vid too "Oahu Still Get Fish." Havnt seen it yet but its on the wish list
