Dubai is becoming a haven for cheap labour. Jobs are becoming harder to find as companies are bringing staff in from 3rd world countries and paying them 1/3 of the price. :vangry

As an exercise, try calling one of the many FIVE or even SIX star hotels in Dubai, and the telephone operators are rude, dont understand, cant spell or pronounce your name (I MEAN HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO SAY SAAAARAAAAA), put you through to the wrong departments, and because they get paid so little they basically dont give a sh1t.

GRIPE OF THE DAY!!!! ::vangry

Easy there Tiger! :)
Business is business me dear and when you’ve got shareholders to keep happy with their 6 or 12 month dividends some people will cut a corner wherever they can and in this case its cheap labour.
The same thing is happening over here with a lot of UK factory jobs going to people who are getting paid a fraction of the wage that a UK worker doing the same job would get paid.
It’s a sad state of affairs when one person doing a job gets half of what another person would earn just because they come from a different country.
Although it can be a touch annoying when you get through to somebody that can’t understand you and you can’t understand them. What I tend to do is just keep asking for their superior and when you get high enough up the ladder there’s always somebody that’s speaks English.

Well, Move!

:t

But in anycase, dont get all upset - remember thats punishing yourself for the stupidity of other people ;)

That's the problem with businesses these days. If you earn 10 million this year, you have to earn 11 million the next year, or you've done a shitty job. What's wrong with earning 10 million each year you would think... the shareholders think otherwise...

The question should be why two people on different ends of the world get paid differently for the same job. And we are not talking about earning the half, but in some cases more like one hundredth and the like...

yes, it's very unfair. people should get paid the same to do the same job, no matter the nationality, however, my complaint is not so much the nationality, its that people are placed in positions in the SERVICE industry and you cannot get the service!
GRIPE!

NO SNUFPUNK i will not move....(i am in love with the UAE and certain things here ;)........ as my complaint is the same UAE wide, of both locals and expats. It's not a question of moving, its a question of the UAE business world taking care of their economy now that they are trying to be one step ahead of the world with their unique offerings in the tourist industry; i.e. The Palms, The World, The QE2, The skiiing, the sports world, the waterfront etc etc.

If you want to operate on attracting tourism as your main income you have to provide an appropriate support structure or you will begin to p2ss people off.. as i am now!! :ko

aww sands..move to bermuda and maybe you'll fall in love with certain things there?? :inlove :inlove :chatup

but more in line with the thread..its somewhat interesting at how things work there. Here it is the exact opposite for the most part. (hope not too many bda'ns are readin this cause i may get a smack) but usually the foreign cheaper labour is better for our service industry. The locals have a feeling of being entitled to the job... they dont have to perform or earn the position..its just theirs and there are more out there... so service lacks
Foreigners on the otherhand seem pleased to be here, but know that poor performace, service.. or misbehaving will result in dismissal by either their employer or even govt. Therefor i find service from cheaper foreigners to be even better than locals... and im sure the businesses love it!

hahahahah the switchboard at the palms will be underwater soon if they dont get their beaches in order rofl

now, talking about a couple of nights in a posh hotel.. what happened to that Savoy promise???

Hmmm...I guess that is Dubai off the list of places to visit.....:D

Here in Alberta there is a massive shortage of workers due to the recent hike in oil prices... it bleeds into every sector. There are big wages for even fast-food jobs and many stores/restaurants/fuel stations close 1 day or an extra day because there is no staff.
We've grown to expect poor or no service in many areas, and paying a premium for it.

Well I love President Bush cause he made Irak into safe place and has secured many more months of cheap oil. He smart man. He let worker for cheap so rich farmers keep be richer.
I speak to cheap labour yesterday from phone company. I in New Zealand they in Manilla, Phillipines. Must make cheap ear insurance for call centre workers there. This world funny place. At least Canada friendly place and promise not to nucklear us all for cheapa oil.

Well come live here in Sydney Sara!

Plenty of tourists to teach SCUBA to! And you can stay with me! *evil grin*

A bit of age can be a good thing. Like a good whiskey. Age gives subtle qualities that once learned to appreciate will turn you away from those young, maybe better looking ones to the ones that may be a little less flashy but god damn they taste good!

I'll second that ;) after the last one i vowed to myself NO MORE OLDER MEN!!

My criteria was 30, non-smoker, non-drinker (or very little), diver, reasonably fit, and horny. So far so good rofl rofl

So you still after a night out even with this-
39 year old, smoking, drinking (well a little more than your criteria), reasonably unfit, diver.:)
As for the horny part I seem to remember we were going to be eating oysters while siting naked at the Savoy, any particular suit you’d like after or shall we just go for it then and there?rofl rofl rofl
By which of course I mean the cheese and biscuits…:p

Funny thing with most countries on the african continent is that you have two classes, have and have nots nothing inbetween. I just got back from my second trip to Nigeria and I must say most people there will fall over their own feet to help you out just for the possibility that they mite get some foreign currency in return. On what they pay people there though being part the constuction industry I have seen what helpers on site get as payment, they get a meager 2000 nira for a weeks work, thats a meager $20. For that I wont be working too much either...

Podge rofl rofl I am always up for cheese and biscuits rofl

deepthinker i heard some news on nigeria a couple of days back about more abductions in Nigeria, thought about you, just be bloody careful out there.

we have networks here in Dubai, they get Indians, (for example; so nobody start swiping me please) in all the HR positions, then they take bribes from people, place them in jobs, and take monthly fees from these people just to keep them in jobs. :vangry

Everything becomes a mafia and there is no real recruitment process anymore, they are all back-handing and if you slip someone a few 1000 dollars they will get you a visa for Dubai (if you are Nepalese or Philippine for example), with the promise of a job and keep you in a labour camp, retain your passport and then stick you on some construction site at 100usd a month.

Gulfnews: 300 held in crack down on illegal workers

i could go on and on....
