These were just picked up out the sand, didn't even need a fork (though you do usually). Spaniards right, they are good eating, and good bait for bass, bream etc too.

Spaniard is sooo right: cannolicchi or cape longhe (razor shells) are very good, better with a quick cooking. This is the traditional way we do:
Purge them in cold salt water for a couple of hours before cooking. Then:
in a large pan pour a "film" of olive oil (2 or 3 millimeters high), good share of minced garlic and the razors. Light fire and let the heat raise for a couple of minutes, then pour in half glass of dry white wine and let it steam, then finish with abundant pepper, a very little salt and fresh minced percil. Serve with toasted bread and that's it.
Will give its best drinking dry white wine served cool.
You may also use this as a dressing for spaghetti (even taking away the long bulky shells). With pasta, pour a thin line of raw olive oil on them as a final touch. Just a simple, cheap, traditional recipie from a friendly country

You find them at lots of west coast beaches.

Very easy to catch by hand snorkelling. Just look for the 2 'silver eyes' quickly and carefully grab the shell with your fingers and ease it out of the sand, as long as you don't pull too fast or else the foot breaks off. I love them and often will grab a handful.

They make and excellent appetiser. I like to quickly steam them just until they open then toss them in olive oil garlic fresh chopped herbs and chilli then sear them on very hot BBQ for a couple of ticks on each side which intensifies the seafood flavour...

I like the sound of your recipe Spaghetti I'll give that a try.

Mamba 90.... sadly it is time to free up some cash and sell the Mamba 90. If anyone in Guernsey is interested then let me know. It is in very good condition and has been used just a few times. Beardy, from my seal encounter I suspect a seal.
When I first spotted the creature it was a grey blur in the distance (probably 30'?) I wonder how long he had been there? However next time he was a lot closer. If we couldn't see him for a few Min's we could usually find him breathing up on the surface. One of my friends swam with a seal in Port Grat last summer.
By the way I found a interesting thread relating to seal attacks in the UK!

Those ormers look familiar... Hope there some more about next year, will have to go back down there again and see if the razors are still about, i haven't looked since then. I wouldn't recommend snorkelling round there, bit dangerous!!!

Thanks Beardy - will do. Any chance of going to the "Knife" -that sounds a really good spot, and I've never been in there.

To get back on topic I had an amazing seal encounter last summer at Limeslade Bay (Near Mumbles, Swansea for anyone who knows Wales). It was a grey seal (we don't really get common seals around here). It was a young one - same size as me which isn't full grown for a Grey. There were 3 of us and it followed us within touching distance for 15 mins or so. It kept nibbling my fins (I was the only one with yellow fins - I've heard since that they like yellow fins more than others).

At one point it went between my legs and opened its mouth showing big pointy teeth. Thankfully it was just curious and not cross!!!!!

Yummy yellow! Reputedly sharks prefer surfers in yellow! (Like shiney fishing lures, perhaps easier to see & more fish like?)

Sounds like Mumbles! (Are you sure it wasn't Catherine Zeta Jones?).

I've been thinking of visiting Gower, may be next year. I used to climb the sea cliffs round there. Gorgeous place -- tide time tables were pretty important for several beaches. Are you allowed to fish around Worms head?
