I've had a look at Ebay and bid for one of those little BNIB Q40s that you can mount on the mask as a back up.
What do you reckon on this for a cheap primary ? had a look but the pca ones were the same price and from Hong Kong (been stung with goods from there on ebay before). Couldn't find any Omer.

Hi Guys, wow what week, on saturday l got dragged off the beach to go spearfishing. So glad l did, got a nice bass about 7lb and saw quite a few larger ones. On monday went for a night dive, out our 1st spot l only got 1 bass at 4lb, the other 2 lads got a couple of bass about the same. We moved to a different spot alot swallower and less tidal run. This turned out to be the best move of the night. We swam around for abit seeing the odd schooly, then l came across a monster bass(11.75lb) in 5ft of water.I swam back to the boat thinking shit this is big. I was feeling quiet smug sitting on the boat until Rob came back, l couldn`t believe his catch. He 8 fish, 7 were around 3-5 lb then he pull out a real monster bass just a smidge under 15lb. I couldn`t believe it... This was our best night ....

I went in for an hour this afternoon and saw 1 mullet (small) and a few rockies. My catch consisted of a 4oz lead I saw on the bottom and decided to add to my collection.
Went in near Fort Grey. Viz started out really good but deteriorated as the tide flooded (as much as it does on a 7.6!!), a real chop on the water as well, so much so I got a few mouth's full of sea water through the top of the snorkel. Not good.
Struggled a bit with the tide for a bit and got pinned close to some rocks til I managed to swim out (I am sooooo unfit...).
have decided that I definitely need a lot of lead. I have been going without but today on doing a few dives I can't stay down. even found it hard work hanging onto a mooring rope where it went into the sand I couldn't hold myself down very well. I need to lose some blubber, reckon I would need my entire lead collection and then I wouldn't be able to walk :crutch
Had a pot shot at a big rockie which was quite amusing as I shot from above, the spear went true and clean and reached the end of the rope just as the spear bumped him between the eyes. Must have felt like a fly landing on his nose!! He still scarpered at top speed though!!
Anyway. better go and stop waffling about how useless I am!!

Sounds like all the Bass have gone to Jersey! (And no foxy, OMD, or Ed, I don't need you to tell me there's still plenty round here!). 15lbs! Struuuth, that would tow me out into the atlantic if I shot that!
I was in yesterday at Foxy's spot and saw nowt, well I did see one 4lber but stoopidly thought I could get closer to make sure of the shot, and guess what, I couldn't. And that was it, No mullet, no more bass, an absolute shed full of roselet, but nothing that would want to eat them. 3 very disappointing hours, though it was neap tide falling to low. Ah well, my barren spell continues.

They're both brill about 7-8lb (each). Got them, tank diving, in approx 90ft on a small gravel bank. They are fantastic colours and match the bottom perfectly. They can change their shading at will which is why the two of them are not identical. They never bury like plaice, sole or turbot but they are none the less very hard to spot, plus they usually live in relatively deep water and in areas of strong tide. Have caught a few freediving but it's more by luck than judgement and even with the tanks it ain't easy.

I know the feeling of fruitlessly seeking the elusive mr. bass only to find that the normal spots hold nothing. The North of Rocquane being a prime example I had to swim up to the reefs off Lihou before seeing anything worthwhile. In the process passing through the most beautiful bootlace with nothing but wrasse and sandeels. The area around Foxy's spot is quite heavily netted and I think that causes the blanks over there:rcard . Nice Fish OMD and Loops.

Once in a nature documentary, I think it was Weird Nature, someone put a fish like a plaice or sole in a tank with a chess board on the bottom. It soon had a pattern with dark and light patches which roughly matched the chess board. Amazing considering that they would never find anything with a similar pattern in their natural environment.Mr. X said:

There are plenty of keen fishermen on our thread Mr X, so I dont think you need worry about posting the occasional question.
I find drift fishing from my boat the most effective & enjoyable way to catch fish. I have a favourite spot only 100mt from shore which has a sandy-gravely bottom. I drift down tide with my bait on the bottom, I find shellfish works the best as a bait. Razor clams or sand gaper clams are very good because they attract most species. I use light tackle, 1oz weight, 10lb braid & 3' of 8lb mono hook length. Of course you have to be there at the right time & tide.
If you can find a similar spot on the edge of the tide about 40-60' deep you may well find success.

The ear seems OK now, so might have a go over the weekend. I had thought about the knife but maybe tide not low enough. So maybe Petit Bot or Rocquaine.
I'm amazed by the night time exploits, something I never tried, so might try that as well.
Off on holiday next week to south brittany so don't want to bugger my ear up for that.

Night dives are amazing. First time I went out with George I remember watching his silhouette on the bottom in about 10m of water surrounded by this most magical pool of green light. I was hooked.
A lot of creatures come out to play at night and often the fish are transfixed by the light - which makes it good to see them up close for a change and also good for hunting.
A good torch is a must. My reference to the the UK lantern the other day set me back a hundred quid (rechargeable) but it has been well worth the money.
Have a great time in Brittany.

Well no one came so I went for the first solo night dive.
Chose a spot with no current and wandered in about ten ish....
In the first ten minutes I found these sole (12 inches - I put two white tape marks on the gun to avoid problems of nocturnal size issues) and a stack of other smaller ones.
Very relaxing actually and not scary at all - I think the underwater-cellos only started once when I saw a large shadow go past my right side... .no idea what it was but either a ten foot 'fish' or more likely the shadow of a rose-lea... spooked a little bit but undetered.
Headed out to deeper water and a large bass swam into the circle of light - checked it out for a while - must have been at least 7 pounds and then good to see it close up. Saw about ten others ranging in size to 4 pounds over the course of the dive.
Bumped into a grey mullet of about 3 pounds, a couches bream of a pound or two, a baby brill, a few small chancres and spiders, a large cuttlefish and a couple of red mullet (the 'larger' one came home with me) - all in all a great dive - in about 2 hours I guess
